Well I prefer to pit my wits against the best.....you sir....are welcome to backward clubs who dont want to improve. I can still meet with friends, get pissed...have a laugh...watch the footie and be content with wathing our team go to united and earn a 0-0...certainly beats any result against a team like bury.....

in my opinion...

0-0 against united > ANY result against bury..

I don't know. The injury time winner in the rearranged league cup tie, after the Reading 0 Bury 2 abandoned match, was very very funny.

As for the question, yes I would mind a lot. If you go down fighting, like say in 1988, when we battled against the odds but just weren't good enough in the end, you can accept it. If you just throw it away through poor performances and complacency at a mangement/board level, as relegation this season would be, it'd hurt much more. Relegation this season would just be a needless waste that could easily have been avoided. The fact that we've played crap this season and are still 6 points from 3rd bottom really shows how poor the bottom half has been this year.

I would mind, I have always minded, and every time have cried. I dont like the prem, same as DG, but would rather be here than not.

Fulham is such a must win game it is unbelieveable, as I cannot see any more points after in the last four games, said how hard the last four would be when the fixtures came out in June, they look even harder now.

When aspiring teams like Portsmouth can lose £23m despite all the cash they get from Sky, then it goes to show that although the stakes are much higher so are the losses. I'd imagine there are similar cost for several other teams (West Ham, Wigan, Sunderland, ...)

How many prem clubs actually run at a profit? I can only think of Man U, Arsenal and Reading.

Eh?

Did you expect Derby to be even worse than they have been?

Arsenal's a write off, Wigan are in relegation trouble, Spurs have nothing to play for and Derby are the worst team in Premiership history.

Those last four fixtures could have been an awful lot worse, every team with something to play for would be desperate to be playing Derby , home or away. They've only had one fixture all season where their opponants have finished empty handed.

Depends how you view a profit? Agree about Man U but aren't they borrowed to about £395million

If someone borrowed £395million and paid off Mr Mad and invested the other £200million odd in the team we would probably be pushing for the top 4. Well for 1 season anyway until the wages started to cripple us.

Anyway a stupid thread. Of course we don't want to be relegated. It may be about money and the 'big' 4 but still much better that being 'stuck' in the championship with a host of similar clubs battling to get out!!!!

Tails you sir....are welcome to backward clubs who dont want to improve.

No-one has said that. Yet again you are reading more into someone's comments than is actually there. Are you a journalist by any chance?

In my opinion....

Watching an entertaining match against ANY opposition >>>>>> watching Reading stick every player behind the ball and getting a 0-0 draw against Man Utd. The result may not be as rewarding, but I am not paying to watch football just for the result.

Interesting point that you have made there and I think this is where the 'true' fans of the club are slightly different.

On Saturday I will be happy with a scrappy 1-0 win. But on your theory you would prefer a 5-4 scoreline either way?

You may question that you are still a true fan but surely if you follow a team then the result comes first and the performance 2nd? Football is still a results business and not a performance one.

I may be wrong here but if you ask the Toon if they would have prefered to have won the Premiership title in 95? (not sure of year) by sneaking a few games with a scrapy 1-0 or are happy that they did not win it then I think that many would have prefered the former!!!

I didn't say that I would prefer to watch us LOSE an entertaining over a boring 1-0 victory (I maybe should have made my point a bit clearer). On Saturday I would be over the moon with a 1-0 victory, but I would be even happier if it is an exciting game as well, what my previous comment was trying to say is that I do not want to pay to watch Reading stick every player behind the ball in the hope of scraping a point, obviously it is required at times, I just hope that I have not paid to see it.

And I had to laugh at your comment about "true" fans whilst implying that I am not one, even though I have been watching Reading for over 25 years.

Football is a results business and I want Reading to be as successful as they can be. Do I want Reading to get relegated? No. Do I mind if Reading get relegated? Also no. The reason I will be still be there to watch and it makes little difference to me what league they are in. Supporting Reading is not a glamour thing for me where I want to be supporting a Premiership club, I wouldn't be embarassed to be a Reading supporter if they were in the Blue Square Premier, I just support my local club. If that makes me not a true fan then so be it.

toppy Would also be interesting to know; who of the current STH will not renew if we go down.

I would be MORE likely to renew if we went down (however I will be renewing regardless of the outcome this season).

Just on a point of clarity, how can you be more likely than 100% certain to renew ? :?

It was hypothetical. If I was having doubts about renewing (which I'm not even though I am apparently not a "true" fan) then I would be more likely to renew if we were relgated.

Any true football fan would be naturally gutted if we get relegated. They might try to find good reasons for going down to make them feel better (cheaper prices, more chance of winning something etc.), but deep down they'd feel like they'd been kicked in the proverbials.

I'd mind VERY MUCH if we go down. I'm not sure the same could be said for the some of the 'fans' on here though.

Just because you would feel that way doesn't mean that everyone would and it doesn't make anyone else less of a fan for thinking otherwise. Some people need to stop being so judgemental of people they don't know.

Sport, or any other competitive human activity, becomes downgraded if the purpose is not to win or do as well as you possibly can. In football as it is currently structured in this country that means winning the Premiership. Therefore, unlikely as that possibility is, it has to be the club's objective.

When I returned to the UK after many years overseas and at an age more advanced then I care to reveal, I took up playing rugby again - for the extra extra B XV of my club, a not very serious form of sporting endeavour. In the seasons I played we were beaten in about 75% of our matches, but I still felt gutted every time we lost. Without constant striving to succeed the whole thing becomes meaningless.

BBC South made a big thing about the SKY money NOT being included in those figures.

To finish with 3 away games in the last four was always going to be hard, I did not expect us to be this close to the bottom three to be honest, as already pointed out we managed to oxf*rd up against watford last season, when a win was almost a given, I would hate to go to derby having to win to stay up, so what if Spurs have nowt to play for, we are hardly good against the big clubs in the Prem, Wigan will beat us easily, I wish we had three more points to be honest, preferably against Bolton at home.

Wycombe don't offence as it wasn't meant that way. We all would love RFC to win and win in style but as a Reading fan I don't want to see us relegated. All I think is that a Reading Football Club fan deep down just wants the team to be as succesful as possible and the actual performance is secondary.

Winning the Championship in style was a fantastic year but some would say that staying in the premiership for another season is maybe (hopefully) a greater achievment.
