Sydneyroyal Does anyone have the figures for how we rated against the bigger clubs in the prem but more interestingly:
do clubs getting promoted from the Championship often buy their promotion or use a settled team?

Lets just hope in a fortnight we still have a team :(

Dirk Gently The significance of tomorrow is that it's the start of the football "year" - standard players' contracts all run from 1st July to 30th June, and so from tomorrow all the players who are released are officially free agents.

Having said that, if a player is not going to be offered a new contract or has declined one, the rules do allow clubs to approach those players without seeking specific permission of the club they are contracted to - they've been able to do that for 6 -8 weeks or so.

All other players who have on-going contracts cannot officially be approached by any club - the contact must be through the club to whom they are contracted. (*)

The other significance of the date is that as it's the start of the season financially, clubs now have money free - all the released players are no longer on the payroll and so new players can be taken on without breaking the budget or cashflow.

(*)this does not, of course, apply to anyone called Trevor Brooking.

That's 'Sir Trevor Brooking the footballing guardian of our moral values and general all-round angel' to you!

Ca I slightly correct you there Dirk?

If the player is based outside of the UK, the club can go in for him 6 months before his contract expires. Likewise, clubs from abroad can go for players based in the UK 6 months in advance. The transfer then take place on the 1st of July.
