Uke The easiest way for Kits, Shorey, et al to get a big signing on fee cheque in their pocket was to be relegated and then to leave

That's a bit cynical, innit? I don't think Shorey has the intelligence to be that scheming, it was just that his England Caps went straight to his head*. As for Kitson, I believe that he did keep on trying .

Platypuss In case you've forgotten:Steve Coppell "Players want to come to clubs with ambition, and we like to think we've got ambition
"If you look at the summer, Man Utd and Liverpool spent 40million, 50million each, we spent hardly anything. So by definition we're losing ground.
"So, for this club to be ambitious we've got be be acquiring three substantial signings every year.
"To be honest, it's a minimum of three.
"As time goes by, those signings will become more expensive.
"For us to make those signings, they've got to want to come here.
"They've got to see the ambition, it's got to be tangible in the form of expensive signings, a bigger stadium.
"Everything about the Club has got to meet the demands of the modern Premier League player."

When did he come out with this? If he actually said this then it's the first intelligent thing I've seen him come out with in two and a half years, shame he didn't have the balls to follow it through.

Vision Except its not a statement of intent but a statement of fact isn't it.
All the quote does is highlight about what it would take to compete and move forward in the Premier League and basically we had neither the money nor the will to do it.

Usually if you're a decent manager, you act according to facts and base your intent on these.
Been asking Coppell why he has come out in the press thanking Madejski for his sound financial backing when in your wise old opinion he's not had a bean have you? Where do you get your information from, you must be a club insider for you to know we couldn't have afforded to buy anyone.

Royal Lady Royalee is of the opinion that his opinions are always right and everyone else is wrong. There's no "debating" sensibly with him. I've given up on the other thread.

Its really not worth bothering with you.
Show me any post where i've said " we couldn't have afforded (sic) to buy anyone"
Show me any post where i've said Coppell hasn't "had a bean".
Its my opinion that to take the strides talked about in that quote we have neither the finances nor the will to make it happen. It requires a gamble and a leap of faith that neither the current chairman nor current manager are prepared to make.

Were we somehow exempt from receiving Premiership TV money then? I guess Bristol City must have rubbed a magic lamp to get the money for Maynard.

Vision Bristol City have sold arguably their best player from last season (Nick Carle) and needed to replace him.
We already have 4 forwards at least 2 of whom are established at this level, something which Nicky Maynard isn't as yet. I think he will be a good player at championship level but he's certainly not ahead of Doyle and Lita at this stage and for the price I'm not sure we'd ever have considered him.

Nick Carle was only at Bristol CIty for the last half of last season and he was a midfielder, so Maynard did not replace him.

I'm talking more in terms of creativity rather than a straight positional swap in much the same way that i see Marek as a replacement for Little despite his preferred position. BTW i certainly saw him at least once play just off a main striker last season.
