Captaincy

by Medusa? » 27 Aug 2010 20:03

I don't generally like picking out one player for criticism, but... here goes anyway.

The more I watch Mills as skipper the less and less I am persuaded that he should be doing the job.

During the Scunny match Howard was far more vocal, directing players and generally making Mills look v quiet. After Federici's howler not one player spoke to him - and neither for Hamer. That is the Captain's job as leader. Even if just to say "get on with it". And after Taylor missed the pen, Mills didn't move. Granted he had given away an own goal, but as a Leader he has the responsibility to get over it and sort out the rest of the team.

I don't know how much on-field leadership is contributing to the current state, but I cannot see a lot of it. I don't know if it's immaturity or character, but something needs working on.

Long time medusa!!!

:)

I think we have a lack of leaders on the pitch at the moment full stop. All you have to do is think back to the 106 squad; as well as Murtz, Ing, Sidwell, Kitson and even USA would have all been leaders on the pitch.

Mills IS a bit immature; I think anyone who gets sent off more than once a season generally is BUT hopefully he will improve with age.

But is Howard guaranteed a start EVERY game? Probably not (though by that criteria Fed should be captain! Actually...................)

Mate it's just a 'hilarious' in-joke and nothing personal. Everyone gets it and for some reason it's allowed to remain because of course if you're a newbie you'll really know the in-jokes of existing members won't you...

Still I'll use it as long as it's allowed so f*ck off newbie

Interesting point. I do remember when Feds messed up *cough - lost us two points - cough* against Forest Pearce was the only one to turn round clench a fist and shout encouragement at him (unless I'm mistaken and that was Mills??).

THat sounds like the actions of a captian. Pity that as a young defender his skills aren't *quite* good enough just yet command the respect of the team.

I miss Parky.

I know what you're saying, but I am almost certain Howard didn't play against Scunthorpe.

I remember at the Watford game at the end of last season, Mills went absolutely balistic at Federici after Watford scored their first goal. He was literally red in the face shouting at him and Feds didn't say a word, just went about getting the ball out of the net and getting ready for the restart. Maybe he's better off when Mills doesn't say a word.

Oh really was it Millsy who turned round and gave him support?

I was too far to be sure but thought Pearce plays left CB?

Mills is 10x a better player when he plays alongside Kish, Pearce gives him no confidence at all so Mills ends up playing a lot worse and not able to captain properly. I say this and I bet Pearce goes and scores again, making up for the numourous howlers he makes at the other end

Pearce already seems a lot more solid at the back - never mind scoring a goal or two - than he ever was. So maybe Mills is having a good effect on him already.

Come come. Pearce is a carthorse. Mills is a good old fashioned "clear your lines" defender and is a good choice of captain with his no nonsense approach. He should not be teaching Pearce. What he needs is some class alongside (Curle, Kishy or Wdowczyk style) to balance off his Hicks tendencies.

Pearce. Name ryhmes with Piss. A bit.

An aspect of good leadership is to do the opposite to what you are feeling and conceal your own emotions. If leadership means bollocking someone for a mistake then it's really the wrong time and strategy to adopt when trying to lift someone off the ground. A captain is surely supposed to spark a team, settle a team down by instilling calm and experience.

We do not have a wealth of experience to captain the team from the back at the moment. Pearce is a big no no. There must be qualities within Mill that are recognised and maybe need to be consistantly realised.
