Williams on his way back to Scunny

Loan deal to end of season

Makes sense - might be the last time we see him in a Reading shirt...

Yes it makes sense. He needs first team football at this stage in his career and he won't get that at Reading.

....can see that being a freebie back to Scunthorpe come end of season - McD made a mistake there and I think he knows that so in everyones interests, if he gets a permanent move back to Scun after loan period, its a win-win

I hope we have inserted a clause insisting that he must play against us on April 12th.

Didn't really see much wrong with him. Few mistakes but nothing that warrants being dropped from the squad for the whole season. Would like to see him given a second chance.

Who have Scunthorpe yet to play? Is this a cunning plan?

He's joined because their previous loanee left back got injured. And that player was Andy Hughes I believe!!

Talk about shit replacing shit

Good luck to him, never got to see him, but it seems a little early for the fans to be dismissing him even if he did have a poor start. Obviously McDermott may have made his decision, but then he's seen him in training every week.

They should count themselves lucky not to have left footed Nicky Shorey at right back.......................that would make the other two look like world beaters.

Is there a rule on when we can recall him if needed?

Didn't think that he was as bad as everyone made out. It's just that with the previous 3 left-backs all having been POTS in recent years...well, y'know.

His primary issue was that he was either forward or back and rarely able to fulfill both roles in any 30sec period of play.

I saw nearly all his matches and to be honest whilst he wasn't great I didn't think he was bad enough to have been banished from the first team picture even when we had a major defensive crisis. Very reminiscent of Sean Cummings really. However, I suspect he will be staying at Scunthorpe beyond the end of the season if he will take the pay cut although we aren't brimful of left backs at the Club now so he might yet see the second Cummings.

After the game against Northampton I'd decided I'd seen enough. He was truly shocking that night.

Not convinced we've seen the last of him in a Reading shirt. McDermott gives people chances, so this would be a remarkable turn around if with less than one season he has lost complete faith in Williams' ability.

Harte may or may not do another season at this level and Chris Armstrong has retired, so we already need one more left back as it is.

I never understood why we didn't offer Dan Harding a contract in the summer. He did alright for us, certainly a lot better than Williams. Perhaps our scouts saw a lot more in Williams than we were getting from Harding, that or Williams was a total gamble, which is unlike us.

Important to bear in mind that when we signed Williams we had no money for any players and the obvious on-going health concerns of Chris Armstrong, so I don't blame McDermott for getting Williams in, he was probably the best free transfer left-back in our wage catergory. However we soon found out in a very short space of time just how average he was, and I certainly remember him getting the runaround at Torquay and Portsmouth and struggling badly. Of course, at the start of the season Shaun Cummings was no longer a wanted man at the club but knuckled down and worked hard and has put himself back into contention. Nothing to say Williams won't do the same.

Would normally agree with that but the fact he couldn't even make the bench at Barnsley with our huge injury list, and has now headed back to his old club, suggests to me that Brian has decided to cut his losses ASAP.

It is likely that they were in negotiations last week, so Williams was left out for that reason.

Pretty much spot on. Some of the comments about him early doors were embarrassing at best. Hope Williams can do a Cummings.
