Feeling relaxed about Wembley

by andrew1957 » 19 May 2011 12:20

Like all of us I am really looking forward to the final and what is arguably the biggest annual game in World football. No other game has a winner takes all £90M prize.

However, although on the day no doubt I will be nervous, I do feel surprisingly relaxed about the final outcome.

I have not been to New Wembley yet. Went to the old one many times but made a pact with myself not to go to the new one until RFC got there. I have turned down a few opportunities to watch other matches there so I am really looking forward to seeing the new stadium in person.

And as for the result - well it seems to me that next season will be really exciting whatever the outcome. If we go up we have PL football to look forward to. Trips to Man U and Liverpool again - all the excitement every week.

However, if we stay down the Championship looks like it will be the most competitive it has ever been next season. With the likes of West Ham coming down with big parachute payments and the likes of Brighton and Southampton on the up, it will be a fantastic roller coaster ride in the Championship next season.

And we all know that some of our better players will be sold if we stay down, so it will be fascinating to see if Brian can work his magic again and re-build the team and get the best out of Manset, Morrison, Church, Taylor, D'Ath, Obita etc etc. So whatever happens next season will be really exciting and so my view is may the best team win at Wembley. I hope it will be us, but if not I will still be there in July really looking forward to next season.

Have people already forgotten how absolutely shit it felt in 95 and 01?

Win win win win win win win win win win win win win win win win

I honestly think a victory at Wembley would be the best thing to witness as an RFC fan since the last time we managed it all those years ago.

The result will define the next few years of being a Reading fan so let's hope to hell it's the right one.

Totally agree with this

Against Notlob we were underdogs and after the 2-0 and a penalty it was heart breaking to get so close and fail.
Against Walsall we were favourites and messed up big time under pressure to perform.

This time feels totally different. Sneaked in to the final, everything we have achieved to date I perceive as a bonus.

Personally I am going for a good day out win or lose, in the full knowledge that should we win we are more than likely to get our arses kicked week in week out at extortionate prices, where as staying down, we will be somewhat competitive in what is building to be a fantastic league with cheaper viewing options.

I really am looking forward to a day out with plenty of drinking, meeting up with pals (Non regulars) and generally having a laugh.

Chill out and enjoy it Guys and Gals. It may be 15 years before the opportunity comes round again.

m8 :!:

Winning is brilliant. Winning at Wembley is even better. The Premiership is just the hangover after a great day out.

I hope we don't lose but it won't hurt as much as 95 no matter what happens.

Part of me, like Red, doesn't want to be in the Prem.

True that West Ham could be strong but is Wigan and Blackpool come down I don't think that they are too much to worry about. Blackpool will lose the two or three remotely decent players that they have and potentially their manager as well and Wigan are just awful. Also don't think the other teams that have stayed in the Champ this year will be too strong. I think Cardiff and forest will both lose players and look to rebuild. Think that if anything it could be a team like Boro that challenge if they sort themselves out.

Well, obviously I won't be at Wembley - I'll be watching from my home in Iowa. But I agree completely with Andew's sentiment regarding next season. Mrs. JGR and I have had our airline tickets to England purchased for a couple months now. At the time we bought the tickets we didn't have any expectation of seeing RFC in the Premier League this coming September. Now, that it's down to one game left to win to go up, I can't quite believe I might be seeing a Man Utd or Liverpool (granted it might also be a Stoke or Bolton). But even if it's Brighton we end up watching play RFC, I don't care. It's still RFC and that's what's important to me. I CANNOT wait for this fall!!!!

Agreed.

Back in 92-93, we didn't give a damn about Archie's p.

It's good to know that nobbers are spread so far afield. Where in Iowa are you located? My step daughter leaves in Villisca which is as about as far from any where you can imagine, even in Iowa.

This.... and, of course, what Mags has posted, too. I think I am now bi-polar.

Yes, the Chumpionship is where we belong now after years of travelling up the M1 and M6 but the Primmadonnaship is what we are conditioned to believe in as the holy grail.

Yes, it would be lovely to have a hangover for a season, but equally I'd like to wake up next to a fat bird and think: "Oh god, what have I done?"

If the squad stayed the same I wouldn't mind too much about losing a game in which we played well. But as a loss would mean we lose some of our best players, a win becomes important. Not too fussed about being in Prem or Champ. More excited about next Monday than about any Prem game. Only one that could get close would be the 1st one v Middlesborough. If we win, can we take the money and stay in the Champ ? ...... didn't think so.

Essentially yes, seeing as the £90m prize includes £48m of parachute payments. If we were to go up and come back down having spent very little, we'd be minted.

Who would we lose if we don't dgo up?

Feds and Long? I can't see any others from the squad being picked up by Premiership teams personally.

From my perspective I'd love us to go up as I'll get more opportunities to see extended highlights of every game on Sky. Unlike Bolton when I genuinely believed that was our only chance of reaching top flight football, if we don't make it I'll gutted rather than completely hearbroken. It took me a good 6 months to get over Bolton - I don't think I'll ever feel as bad after a football match as that.
