Young: 'Cummins was a massive influence'

Manchester United and England winger Ashley Young has paid tribute to Reading coach Chris Cummins, after completing a multi-million pound transfer to Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old recently spoke to Birmingham paper The Sunday Mercury, and admitted that Cummins played a huge role in his development whilst working within the Watford Academy.

"He's been a massive influence on my career, to be honest," said Young. "He always helped me out and I've always been thankful to him for what he's done. He was one of the coaches that took me to Watford when I was nine or ten years-old and he was my coach through most the youth team.

"He was around when I was going through the reserves and when I finally got into the first team. We still keep in touch now and his advice has helped me from back then all the way up to now.

"He helped me a lot when I was a youngster. It was the simple things that he supported me with, just giving me advice and things like that. It was always nice to hear advice from him."

"There's always a debate about my size. I'm not the biggest now, but I was small up until about 19. I'm 11 stone now and there was always times when people said about my height and my weight - he's too slight, he'll never make it.

"Chris backed my corner because I said I had a footballing brain and I didn't have to be big or tall to be able to play football because I knew what I was doing on the pitch. I think because of that I used my ability to my advantage.

Former England and Watford manager Graham Taylor has also acknowledged the Reading coach's role.

"The youth team coach Chris Cummings had a lot to do with Ashley Young's development," he said.

"After I left, they were going to release him and it was only through Chris - and Ashley himself - that they kept him on amateur forms.

"For six months, Ashley kept going to the club, rather than getting another job, and proved he was well worth a contract. Watford owe a lot to Chris for getting that money for Ashley."

Cummins himself has signalled his determination to find equally precocious talent with the Royals - click here to read more.

Its amazing to think Young was actually rejected by us at first but vowed to work hard and win a place back in the Adcademy.

Good example of why youngsters shouldn't just give up on the game.
