Summer transfer policy

by Compo's Hat » 07 Jul 2011 22:21

Now he has moved on, the club and Brian McDermott continue to actively seek a new central defender, as part of our summer transfer policy.

So what is this new summer transfer policy that the club has suddenly told us about from nowhere? Is it honestly any different from what we've done in the couple of years before where we buy cheap and hope to make a profit it try and get the club in profit for the season.

Just reads as awful spin from the club to me thinking we're all idiots and will buy this crap!

I think it just cements how we strive to sell big and buy small. That's the only policy we have. Though to be fair, that policy does generally work for us, due to our quality scouting and seeing future-potential-ability-ness...

buying cheap hasn't let us down has it? the club were prepared for this and unlike with Sigurdsson we have plenty of time to bring in a replacement.

where is all the money going does concern me though. im not convinced about this on going deficit we have to keep finding money for since relegation. we have made an unbelievable amount from player sales, and there was also the parachute payments. wages should be back in check, and we certainly don't spend large amounts in transfer fees.

im happy to trust in Hammond and McDermott but i do wonder where the money goes now.

We'll end up like Sheffield United and Preston eventually if we keep going like this eventually.

If by "eventually" you mean "next May" then you're spot on.

Not if we keep up our relatively good hit rate on cheap players and keep making big money when they move on.

Sheff Utd, Preston, Leeds, Norwich, Southampton etc have all thought the same thing in recent years. They all fell, we will too if we don't wake up soon.

And yet...

...less than a year ago, Avon
LoyalRoyalFan You have to spend big to replace big players. Reading are trying to do it on the cheap again. McDermott has been given a budget that reflects this.

That is utter bollocks.

How much did we spend on Gylfi?

Policy is simple...... make PROFIT as with any business.

I think RFC is a well run business, shrewd investments turn into long term financial gain

Preston were relegated this year because they overspent and had to clear out

Sheffield also got themselves into financial hot water, despite the Tevez money.

Southampton were in terrible financial trouble...

the list goes on

As a Reading fan what would you prefer - profit or promotion?

It works for now but there is a very real danger that it will stop working because others make signings that are better than the players we're left with and the rough diamonds we sign and bring through the academy. It happened after the first PL when that team reached it's pinnacle, we failed to build properly on a solid base and were left behind by the teams who finished below us.

This team has reached it's pinnacle with the Play Off final it remains to be seen what fate will befall this team.

Somewhere in the middle tbf. The club is losing money. It must be with our fanbase and thr current economic climate. We are blessed with a sensible chairman and a good board and a fantastic manager.

The club appears to me to be being run without profit or loss, and we are playing some great football with a great squad.

Call me boring but I quite like that. The fact remains that yet again, we will be pushing for promotion this coming season on a shoestring. Be proud.
