Favourite grounds to visit

by Terminal Boardom » 26 Aug 2011 11:21

Having been to well over 100 grounds across the UK, I wonder what the HNA? regulars feel are amongst their favourite grounds to visit. The criteria should not cover whether it was a great game / result but whether you enjoyed the experience of getting there and the facilities, or otherwise, on offer.

One of my all time favourites has to be Griffin Park and remains the only ground I have been to where I have stood on all 4 sides. Pub on each corner and usually good fun too. I also quite like the old Brisbane Road ground before the redevelopments and Bootham Crescent was also a great place to watch football and a great city to get completely toiletted. One regret that I do have was not going to Boothferry Park before they demolished the old North Stand and stuck a supermarket in its place.

Grounds I did not enjoy one bit were places like The Shay, Gresty Road (pre developments) and Sealand Rd.

really like oakwell, away car park and pub two mins walk from the away end, easy to get to, just of the motorway. and they have an open ended concourse meaning i can have a smoke at halftime while drinking a beer. All boxes ticked for me.

Hate fratton park, and kenilworth road - "Stand up if you cant sit down"

Both Sheffield grounds.

Bramhall Lane has the most consistantly good atmosphere of any ground I've been to.

Hillsbourough is just a lovely cavernous old ground.

Turf Moor

Hate list

Kennilworth Rd - Away end designed for unibuttocked amputees

DW Stadium -

Concur with the above really.

Griffin Park top the list, always an enjoyable trip to Bramall Lane. London Road Peterboro currently has the best Away End in the League IMO.

Bramall Lane. Been a few times now and it's a big stadium, close to the pitch, and can get really noisy.

Most underwhelming stadium = Old Trafford.
Again been a couple of times to see us and sat in the corner and behind the goal and it wasn't impressed at all.

A top away ground needs a good pub, with decent beer; a ground with a decent atmosphere thats easy to get in and out of.

My favourite is Fulham, with prematch at the Crabtree and street parking nearby.

WBA is also worth a mention for the prematch at the Vine, but getting away is a pain as they force you to walk right around the ground.

Of the others mentioned; Turf moor - thumbs down from me no concourse bar, no pub (cricket ground), Kennilworth Rd, shit away end but worth visit just for the quirky entrance in someone's back garden; Bramall lane gets a thumbs down for being waterlogged; Wigan is OK, the prematch stadium bar is good, loads of parking and gr8 pies.

agree with likes for Brentford, Fulham.
Baseball Ground probably an all-time favourite, Wrexham was 'interesting', Exeter and Shots still OK in a retro way.
Also liked Goodsion last season.

I h8 Loftus Road...can't stand the place. Standing at a lofty 6'6 I couldn't sit down in their pesky excuses for seats even if I wanted to.

Favourites? Got a soft spot for Turf Moor...it's so bad it's good. And GP is another fave.

I used to love Blackpool's ground before they rebuilt it. It was like stepping back to the 50s. The 1850s.

It think it also helped that I went three times, and we won 4-0, 4-2 and 2-0.

The McAlpine (or whatever its called now) - mainly for the fantastic Gas Club where you could get a round of drinks for 8 people costing well under a tenner....

I also liked St James' Park; right in the Centre of Newcastle.

Craven Cottage. Good pubs nearby and used to be a short stroll home.

Definitely Villa Park. The red brick stands and the Sam Leitch fascia; and what was then the old Holte End terrace, which was just huge. Also enjoyed trips to Craven Cottage, but no matter what time of year, it always seemed freezing. Love the Stevenage Road stand.

As for dislikes: Boundary Park, Oldham. 'Nuff said.

And you can watch the swans on the Thames if the game's dull like my mum did when my dad took her to Fulham game all those years ago.

Of course if you do that nowadays you just get the back of the stand...

Did anyone go to Northampton's old ground - the one they shared with the country cricket club? A hummock of an away terrace with a bowling green behind, what used to be an impressive main stand that run the length of the pitch and an noisy covered terrace at the other end. The left hand side a huge expanse of turn with the cricket pavilion about 3 miles away

Yep - it was a shocking ground to visit.

When the Sun was low you had zero chance of seeing anything to the right of the away...er, paddock. Not sad to have seen that one fade away for football use.

Shout out for the old Port Vale ground, went there once in a promotion season circa 1978/9. Just huge, massive terracing, though why?

Like the old Valley at Charlton as well, that side terrace was extraordinary.
