Singular Moments That Didn't Involve A Goal...

by Agent Balti » 22 Feb 2012 19:36

...or promotion or relegation, something quite insignificant, but you remember them just the same.

My first time standing on the Tilehurst End vs Manchester City ('87, I think.) Thinking 'Wow, this is FOOTBALL, proper FOOTBALL'. I'd never seen a professional game before. We lost 2-0. Paul Stewart, I think, scored both.

Billy Whitehurst - After a bit of a fracas in front of the South Bank, the ever encouraging throng demanded that Billy sorted it out...and he duly fronted up to the offender. (Possibly chinning him, can't quite recall.) He needed little encouragement did Billy!

South Bank, Elm Park, vs Sunderland. The look on the girl's face and probably the boyfriend when she was told in no uncertain terms that she had a 'cvnt like a bucket'. You just don't make them like that anymore!

Fast forward...

Mass Sarr - Probably THE most frustrating player we've had, but on his day he was worth his weight in Jaffa Cakes. In front of the East Stand, full back marking him. Back heeled the ball with his left foot onto his right shin and ran on to receive his own thru ball. Unfortunately, we never saw enough of that from Mass.

Adie Williams vs Jason Roberts - I think, could be mistaken, when Jason played for Wigan, so could have been the Play-Off Semi-Final. Adie had him in his pocket all game. At one point, Roberts went to chase a thru ball, Adie marshalled the ball back to the keeper, out-muscling Roberts for the umpteenth time. Roberts, fell to the floor, Adie stood over him and muttered something to Roberts, looking rather God-like. One of those moments where nothing really happened, but it meant so much more.

James Harper vs Rotherham (I think) - James' home debut, and he did his infamous 'showboat' which Pardew went ballistic at. I don't believe he ever did a step-over ever again!

Probably got loads more if I think about it but I'll leave it there...

That was Stoke I think, m8.

Home to Barnsley in 1995-ish when the one of the away fans had his dog with him. There were only a few hundred Barnsley fans, so during the second half he took it for a walk from one side of the terrace to the other, repeating a few times. I'd like to think it was a whippet, but sadly, I don't think it was.

A York fan wearing a 1970s parka anorak at EP in the early 90s. Got absolutely mercilessly slated by the Southbank to a point where he had to be restrained from climbing the fencing to remonstrate. Got back to the car to listen to Sports Report and were informed that a horse called Anorak had won the big race of the day............at York

Khalifa Cisse keeping Rooney under control for (almost) 90 minutes at home in 07/08 match

Shorey's run and shot against Boro in first PL game that galvanised the team and fans after going 2-0 down

Rammed Southbank chanting 'where's your caravan?' at John DeWolf. It was deafeningly loud and clear.

Going to Upton Park and the whole away end signing 'Trevor Brooking, what a w**ker'. Never seen home fans so outraged, it was like we had spat it gods face

James Lambert running the length of the pitch with the ball against forest and missing. Or did he score? I can't remember.

however, Steve stones was by far and away the worst miss that night.

Similarly Scott Taylor in the EP mud against Tranmere in the POSF 2nd leg in 1995.

He missed.

Karacan hitting the post in the play-off final, I think I'd have just combusted if that had gone in.

Dean Horrix, after the ball went out for a throw, picking up the ball and offering to the oppo, only to drop it as the oppo went to take it.

Pure Deano - pure class

First thing that comes to mind is Jobi's run against Liverpool in the cup.

Remember Taylor being on the bench for an evening game and McGhee called him over to make a substitution. As he took his training jumper off he had a t-shirt on underneath instead of his Reading shirt. McGhee really wasn't happy and slapped him really hard around the back of his head.

lambert against forest - he scored that.

Paul Holsgrove, can't recall the game but clearly remember us losing, him have yet another poor game and getting stick from the crowd until he lost his cool and stuck his middle finger up at the South Bank whilst mouthing 'f@ck off". Queue a barrage of abuse at Holsgrove from the South Bank, he never played for us again after that.

Great goal in that case.

My memory was that it was 3 all and that would have won it. Obviously not.
