Play Off Data

by Barry the bird boggler » 08 Mar 2012 12:25

Reading are indeed crap at the play offs, however they are not the worst - spare a thought for poor old Preston who have reached more playoffs than any other club but still haven't won any. Then there's Nottm F who've reach 4 playoffs but never got past the Semi stage.

The table below shows those sides that, since the FL playoffs were instigated in 1987, have reached 3 or more playoffs at Division 2, Division 3 or Division 4 level.

Reading are 46th out of 52.

Semi - Finalist - Winner - Tot Play Offs
Blackpool 1 1 4 6
Peterborough 0 0 3 3
Crystal Palace 2 1 3 6
Swindon Town 2 1 3 6
Burnley 1 0 2 3
Walsall 1 0 2 3
Gillingham 0 2 2 4
Notts County 1 1 2 4
Charlton Athletic 2 0 2 4
Watford 2 0 2 4
Leicester City 1 2 2 5
Swansea 2 2 2 6
Bolton 3 2 2 7
Huddersfield 4 1 2 7
Scunthorpe 4 1 2 7

West Brom 1 1 1 3
Colchester 2 0 1 3
Wycombe 2 0 1 3
Bristol Rovers 1 2 1 4
Blackburn Rovers 2 1 1 4
Derby County 2 1 1 4
Northampton 2 1 1 4

None - equal with Torquay, Leeds, Bristol City, Sheff U and Preston. Still, records are made to be broken... and one of Torquay and Sheff U will do it this season

why do you need total play-offs?, most of us can just add the others together.

Before this thread I would've guessed Ipswich as having the worst record as I remeber them seemingly knocked out in the semis eveyr year for a while.

6-0-1-7 so a way up the list but overall that's a lot of heartbreak

It's amazing that 52 teams have featured in playoffs. If I read the figures correctly only Peterborough gave won every playoff they have been in(3)
Another quirky stat is that no team has been in less than 3 playoffs

Considering the list is only those teams who've been in the playoffs 3 or more times that's hardly surprising

Im actually amazed that there are that many teams with a worse play off record. Still, you have to be good enough to get in them in the 1st place to be crap at them.

Has any club never made the play offs? Obviously those new to the league, but any long standing league clubs?

On those stats some of the team don't appear to have played in the semi finals but have won the finals. Were there no semis at one time or summat?

Peterborough for instance appear never to have been a semi finalist or a finalist but nevertheless have won it three times. Or am I being obtuse?

 it's only recorded when you lose. On that logic there are loads of teams that have won the playoffs without being finalists.

Yes

The first column is the number of times a team has lost in the semi finals, second column is lost in the final.
