And that Stuart Beavon is still scoring goals to this day. He's kept himself fit but he's had to drop down a division or two to Wycombe. How old is he now? Early 50s? Doesn't look a day over 30!

Gilkesy still looks pretty lean and mean. I think he was on the bench for Hungerford Town this season!

Talking to someone who played on that day, the players ignored Branfoot's instructions during the Simod Cup run. They went and played the way they wanted to play and dispensed with the dreadful hoofball. The result was that we completely destroyed what was a very good Luton side. How many aimless hoofs did Hicksy play that day? 1! Matt Mills would have been the perfect Branfoot player.

Yep, remember this..... Smillie and a couple of others fell out with Branfoot shortly after this great day when he insisted of going back to his league XI (with the likes of Whitehurst & Moran) and the hoof ball.... which got us relegated.

Good times :)

Isaac Hunt Whitehurst & Moran

They were quite the partnership though. Whitehurst's powerful presence in the box was obviously greatly appreciated by Moran.

A simply wonderful day all round. The Coventry semi-final and our day at Wembley were truly magical moments.

Wycombe Royal I feel old

You wait till you are actually old and there is no choice.
A great day out in an otherwise dreadful season and apart from one reserves cup final v Bournemouth in the very dim and distant and the close Watney Cup final v Man Utd the Simod Cup run and final were the first real glory events that I can remember.

I always thought that the Watney Cup game was a quarter final. And how could you miss the Berks & Berks Senior Cup Final in 1994/95? The stuff legends are made of!

Edit, on checking, it was a first round tie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watney_Cup

There were only 8 teams in the Watney Cup, so 1st round = Q/F. IIRC it was the 2 teams from each division who had scored most goals the previous season. Or something like that!

What a fabulous day out, can still see that crossbar shaking from Taits thunderbolt shot too. Wish I'd been a little more than 8 so could have had all the beers and build up too but a truly awesome experience seeing little old Reading at wembley and destroying yet more higher league opposition

Yeah, never really understood why Branfoot changed the Simod Cup team which was better to watch and got good results when going back into league games. Personally at the time I thought it's shame Smee didn't have the bottle to give Branfoot the push before Xmas

IIRC, the Simod Cup final team was a makeshift XI, as Whitehurst and Moran weren't eligible to play. I remember the first league game after the final, being appalled that Branfoot hadn't stuck with the team that had performed so well at Wembley. I suppose he had signed those players to get us out of the relegation dog-fight, but I always felt the team that had won at Wembley deserved the chance to take the field the following week in the league.
