There's an agreement between the Premier League and UEFA that premier league games won't clash with champions league games unless there isn't an alternative. So that's why and means the game probably won't be till at least December (although if both teams go out the league cup soon there could be a week freed up in October maybe)

Was Adam Johnson signed in time for the original match, if so think he is not available for the rearraqnged game

Wasn't in time, but I'm pretty sure he can play as in theory a team could otherwise be in a situation where they've lost the original and cannot use a replacement, would happily be told I'm wrong though!

not quite sure how that would work after all if Johnson had been on a one match suspension for the game with Reading you wouldn't expect that suspencion to be held over untill the re-arranged game .

As long as there's some decent notice i'm not bothered when it's played.

when ever the date is announced I doubt there will be to many who will fancy a midweek trip up to Sunderland when it's going to be dark and cold.

Why? Are UEFA that worried that the likes of Sunderland v Reading will mean a few less people watching some pointless round robin game on the telly?

apparantly Uefa are't even happy about Championship and League 1 and 2 games being played on the same night as the Champions League.

Tough. Who the hell do they think they are? The people trying to kill off live sport in order to get a bigger TV audience for the ads that people leave the room to avoid?

I totally agree. I understand if were some massive title decider and they don't want competing TV audiences but non-televised games shouldn't really be subject to it imo. A couple of years ago the premier league re-arranged Fulham v Wigan (it might not have been that but something equally dull) to a champions league night and UEFA reportedly went mental and wanted to take action but it's not a legal or official agreement more of a gentleman's one so they couldn't. Despite this the rule seems to be upheld every year until March and everyone runs out of time to play fixtures.

Also worth noting that the rule was another of Mr. Platini's grand ideas!

Sunderland and Reading are being forced to play their re-arranged Premier League game in December due to UEFA regulations which forbid top flight matches being played in the same week as scheduled Champions League and Europa League clashes.

Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has called for the Premier League to support both clubs' push for their postponed August league game to be switched to October to avoid a major fixture backlog in December.

At present all Premier League club will play six league games, including three in a week between December 22 and 29, which in Sunderland's case is followed by the visit to Liverpool on New Year's Day while Reading travel to Tottenham.

Sunderland and Reading have been in talks to reschedule this season's first home game at the Stadium of Light which was postponed just hours before kick-off due to a waterlogged pitch.

But their plans to move the game to next month have been blocked by UEFA regulations and they are limited with alternative dates because the UEFA calendar now takes up 21 days in the season. When the Premier League started the figure was 13.

They are now hoping the Premier League will back plans to play the game in a UEFA week, just as the Merseyside derby was given special dispensation last season.

Sunderland are also keen to play the game before the Tyne-Wear derby on October 21 which would allow captain Lee Cattermole to play against Newcastle United.

O'Neill said: 'There have been discussions between the two clubs and the Premier League but we can't play games in a European week which means the only time then would be December where there is only 58 games in 31 days.

'It is absolutely extraordinarily and it would be really crazy and ludicrous to move it to December and the worst possible outcome when we are already overloaded. It would not be fair on the players in particular, particularly when they are always talking about injuries due to the amount of games.'

Just play it in 2013, why the rush?

UEFA should do a rethink on their rules and apply some common sense by adding a clause to permit Premier League games to be played if necessary at the same time a Champions League Matches.

After all how many times are Premier League matches postponed!!!
