Post Olympic Blues

by blythspartan » 03 Nov 2012 18:31

Before the olympics started I was thinking what a waste of money and I was still on top of the world after Reading's promotion. However, after being lucky enough to go to a couple of the events and seeing how much it mean't to all the athletes taking part and the feel good factor it gave to the nation, it's made me realise what jumped up spoilt little brats some footballers are. I know the olympics have been gone for a while now but I am really struggling to watch football matches at the moment. May be it coincides with Reading' s poor start but I am sick to death of watching smug faced commentators eulogising over the fact that a team boasting £100m worth of talent has spanked a team costing a fraction of the price. I hope Reading can stay in the premiership this season but it was a whole lot more fun getting there and there are already cracks showing in the squad. My next match is away at Wigan, so I am hoping that will kick start me back in to football mode. At least one good thing, I never got a response to any of the letters that I sent to "Jim Will Fix it".

Just imagine the win away at 'boro. It's like trudging through a treacle field at the moment being a supporter. I almost never went to the match on Tuesday due to the malaise that has set into my mindset.
Perseverance dear boy, perseverance. As a supporter the elation grew to trepidation rapidly over the closed season. It always does for me but that might also be the fact that i have to learn how to live a live outside of football. Catch up with what i like doing outside of being a supporter and gradually, just gradually notch that flicker of interest in the season.
Pre-season sometimes eases me into this feeling but it never worked out this time. BANG - straight into reality of the muddy slippery slope we have to climb hoping for a purchase point. Keep trudging on is all i can say.

I totally understand the feelings you describe about football in a post-Olympic era.

The atmosphere at the Olympics was wonderful. I was lucky to go to Olympic football, Olympic Closing Ceremony, Hockey, Handball, Paralympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Goalball, Athletics, Wheel chair basket ball and wheel chair Tennis. Even the Olympic football was a surreal experience with 80,000 people cheering for both teams. Also the chance to see other sports such as Hockey and Handball where the whole crowd collectively created a lovely atmosphere and being at the Olympic Closing Ceremony made me experience feelings I'd never experienced since the time I flew supersonic on Concorde.

Leaving the Olympic Park after the Paralympic Closing ceremony - I couldn't believe the gates I walked out of would soon be closed for good - at least in terms of the park being an Olympic venue.

Except for the Olympic parade the day after, the sporting news quickly returned to the world of football with the Olympic heroes being replaced with every day stories of what Wayne Rooney had for breakfast or pictures of footballers driving around in their fancy vehicles that cost on average what an average person earns in five years. During the Olympics the whole nation came together and now everyone is divided back into their tribes, some of which are ruled by aggressive working class alpha males regarding their football club in the same way as a religious extremist regards their higher power following a set of man made rules that often differ from the wishes of the higher power.

At Reading, be thankful the Madejski is a lovely stadium with a great atmosphere in terms that people get behind their team in a way that is safe to bring the family. When I brought a friend to Reading, whose sole experience of football was Luton Town, she was gobsmacked at how nice and modern the stadium is and the amount of kids present.

As for overcoming the post Olympic blues, take it a day at a time. If you want to do something other than football then go ahead - you're not making a permanent decision to stop going to football. I went through a complete depression after the Olympics and struggled to get back into football but now I'm slowly regaining my interest. Might not be as mad as before but some of that is down to the fact I now work in the city.
