There are many contenders. Phil Parkinson, Mick Tait, Mick Gooding (sorry mate but you could play too), Mark McGhee, Jimmy Quinn and Martin HickS.

However, the winner for me was Terry Hurlock. If he played he generally had the centre circle to himself as no opponent would venture there!

Been reliably informed that Tommy Tait was as hard as they come in the 1930's. Mind you, it was an era where bookings were few and far between but the ref's word was final and you didn't give him any shit whatsoever.

I'd say Billy Whitehurst from my time of watching Reading. Yes Hurlock was hard but Whitehurst could be drunkenly psychotic and players have said on the record that they were genuinely scared of him.

By a country mile has to be Hurlock,genuinely felt sorry for the opposition when Terry was wound up.Mick Tait was also hard as nails...remember him slide tackling a player in a 50/50 and as he slid past chinned the guy...out cold.....ref couldnt work out how it happened.
