Robbie Savage on Reading's Survival

by CavershamRoyal » 23 Dec 2012 20:31

Interesting article on the BBC from Savage:

Hits the nail on the head really. The squad doesn't have enough quality and we leak goals.

They had allowed opponents 306 shots on goal in 17 league games, more than any other top-flight team in the major European leagues of England, Spain and Italy.

I noticed before today he changed the view that Villa would go down...I guess he might do another u-turn now.

This. Our centre Midfield particular has been the problem. We don't have the fine balance of attacking, defensive and creative.

When did we last have a creative midfield player?

How many goals have our midfield players scored this season?

Guthrie is what we have in the team now, McDermott wanted a creative player who does not have enough quality to play behind the ST. Stick him in centre midfield or just in front of the CBs and you will see the best out of him.

You need defensive, creative players and attacking players in the prem and we are proving that now and let me guess you are part of the short sighted brigade wanting a striker?

Whoever wins the midfield battle 9 out of 10 games you are gonna win. We have no game winners in midfield but our relegation rivals do QPR have Tarrabt, Southampton have Lallana & Ramirez, Sunderland have Sessegnon, Villa have Ireland, Wigan have Maloney.

8 goals, but I am talking about centre midfield so 2. Legsofwood, scoring a great goal but still oxf*rd shit! Guthrie scoring a free kick from a Cech mistake.

Some players never settle at a new club for all sorts of reasons. Guthrie appears to fall into this camp.

Given the budget at the clubs disposal. A striker of the necessary calibre is out of the question.

This season is determining those players that deserve to stay on and those that simply aren't making the grade.

The money would be better spent in the summer on lower league players with the potential to make the grade.

I don't blame Guthrie for not settling in, all promises and not even having a chance to play in your best position that would make any one unsettled. (Don't agree with him not travelling)

All this talk about money, there are players out there and I still believe our strongest first 11 are good enough to stay in the league just tactics and selection have let us down. Just need a CDM and a CAM anything else is a bonus.

I agree with the last bit. We need to make sure the players we bring in permanent are happy enough to go down to the championship for a season or a half. We need to make sure if we go down, we have a capable squad to get promotion the first time of asking.

They're all pretty rubbish to be honest . Considering the money sloshing about, football in general is very mediocre. The coaching, the coverage (the word "punditry" says it all), the way it's run . The bar is set low, and that seems to be how they like it.
