Why I'm excited for next season

by St. Brynjar » 14 Apr 2013 13:36

Yesterday, despite being very lucky to escape with just a point, gave me lots of optimism for the future of this team. The fans were rocking and the players were responding and it was genuinely the most fun match I've been to all season - and I'm disregarding the 'Reading time' games because before the last few minutes we looked average at best. And the reason I'm looking forward is the potential growth of this year's signings - the likes of Gunter, Mariappa, Blackman, Guthrie, Kelly, Carrico and McCleary. They looked like they were actually enjoying themselves for the first time since the Stoke game. Factor in the young stars of this season - McCarthy, Morrison, HRK - and we have the makings of a very promising Championship team. Maybe this is Brian's legacy, he's left a very capable team behind that should easily challenge next season.

I'm well aware that we were largely outclassed in the final third, but at points we played lovely stuff and in no way was our midfield overrun. With a summer for the new manager to perfect the style he wants, bring in the quality we need to excel and stamp his mark on the time I for one am looking forward to a few decent displays next year and hopefully a swift return.

we got battered for about 60 minutes of that game. Better finishing and you wouldn't be so happy.

But for 30 minutes we weren't getting battered, we've had too many false dawns this season but new manager this time so hopefully we are allowed to be less cynical about it this time ;)

Keep as much of the squad together as we can, we are already passing it much better than in years before and it's only been a few weeks.

If we can hang on to our players, then im also looking forward to next season, cant wait to see McCarthy, Morrison, Mariappa, McCleary, Kebe, HRK, Carrico, Guthrie, Akpan, ALF, Pogrebnyak and even some of Obita, Samuel, Ikpeazu in the match day 18.

With Adkins only having been here for 3 weeks, the mere thought of him getting us to a level where we'd be able to match Liverpool for 90 minutes playing a style different to what we were playing earlier in the season is pretty laughable. Those using the Liverpool pressure in the last 10 minutes of each half as a stick with which to beat him are embarrassing themselves.

What was good to see yesterday is that even after such a short period there were significant signs of positive progression. We have 5 months and a summer transfer window before Adkins' tenure starts in earnest, and at this progression rate, along with a few good additions...well as the OP says there is a positive vibe around the place. The players sound happier, as do the fans.

What is this "significan progression"? We got comprehensively outplayed for at least an hour of the match and shoukd have lost by a hatful.

Amazing.

I'd say we were outplayed for roughly 20-25 minutes of the game, and we outplayed them for a good chunk of the second half. Awful finishing coupled with awesome goalkeeping kept it at 0-0 but you may have noticed (if you are in possession of a pair of ears) a great atmosphere in second half as most of us in the stadium noticed that we were playing some great football.

I'm genuinely excited this time around. I also feel the standard in the championship will be lower than it was last season. There's only a few good footballing sides in there & 2 of them will be promoted in all likelihood.

No reason why we can't have a decent crack at going straight back. The fact Adkins has done just that with Scunny gives me plenty of hope. I predict unwavering support for Adkins too - the fans will be 100% behind him all the way.

Bring it on!

Disagree. We never expected a point from the game, but the effort and the improved playing style was what pleased me and many others most. There are signs of improvement already, and Adkins has only had just over two weeks to train with his players. It was very encouraging, and I am already looking forward to giving next season a good go.

'Signs of progression'. We're nowhere near the level of Liverpool, and I'm certainly not going to judge us in comparison to them. However there were parts of our play yesterday that were very good, the movement was better, our shape was better, and we looked more comfortable. Liverpool's chances mainly came from individual errors or tiredness, rather than issues with the team as a whole.

I saw enough to reassure me, and judging by the reaction of the fanbase as a whole yesterday so did many others.

It's been 3 weeks, I'd expect Brighton to dominate us after that amount of time let alone Liverpool.

I'm not having a go at Adkins - as you say, you can't change a team in three weeks.

Just don't really see why people are spanking themselves off after an extremely fortuitous home point, apparently because the crowd perked up when we started playing better :|

And lol@only being second best for twenty minutes. They had 8 shots in the first half to our 1 according to the screen.

People say this every year. It's a wonder the Championship has any standards at all.

People also say every year that the teams coming down or getting promoted from League 1 are going to make the standard higher.

The majority of their shots came in the last 10 minutes of the first half though when we were a little ragged, likewise in the second half after Morrison appeared to lose use of his legs.

I agree that it was a 'fortuitous point', but we had our moments, and in the second half I thought it was mostly even. Indeed we actually had the best chance of the whole match.

I'm not 'spanking myself off', I'm just happy with what I saw (and that's not because the 'crowd perked up'). If you aren't then fair enough.

I think the year we were promoted was a very strong year - Southampton, Cardiff, West Ham, Brighton and Leicester were all strong teams expected to do well. This year is much worse, the relegated sides have been poor other than Bolton, and only Cardiff look a good team. It remains to be seen what the standard will be next season but I think with Reading, QPR and one of Stoke, Norwich, Sunderland, Wigan, Newcastle or Villa will make it much harder.

We've not exactly got much to do except bitch about McDermott being sacked, or look forward with some optimism to next season. Of course people are going to look for, find and probably slightly over-exaggerate positives.

At the moment, all anyone is doing is saying there are good signs of us improving. They're not saying we've suddenly stopped being shit and all is well again. It's just time to look forward.

Mags and Co can't help it. It's in their genes.

The year we were 8th we lost 0-4 to Arsenal and were lucky to get the nil

Anyone who can't see the changes being made are either blinkered or have an agenda.

Adkins (if he's not poached) will turn us into a very good team. The signs are already there.

Go with that Snowball, Adkins will turn us into a good side, if we can keep the nucleus of this side with the likes of, McCarthy, Kelly, Carrico, Guthrie, Mcleary, Mcanuff, Mariappa, Pearce, le fondre, HRK and maybe Kebe, bring four or five ball players in that would give us a very strong championship squad, with that we will do ok, also I would like to keep Hunt as I think he is a good player to keep at the club, his enthusiasm and energy will be of invaluable use in the championship

based on what exactly? I'm not anti Adkins either. Once the decision has been made (that i can't affect) then i'm 100% behind
whoever is in charge, playing staff etc

A few purple patches here and there but still 1 point in nine and tbf totally outplayed by each of the three teams for a majority
of the games. And no amateur hour, highly selective stats either please.
