Nigel's Latin

by Gunny Fishcake » 29 Apr 2013 12:51

I never buy a programme , but reading a mates yesterday against QPR I noticed Nigel's programme notes were signed off with "Carpe Diem"

I'm pretty sure the vast majority didn't have a clue what that means and presuming it wasn't a typo I Googled it .

It means give or take " Seize the Day "

That did the job then !

Erm sorry, no....... bit of an insult really and a commonly used latin phrase actually, thank you very much. Anyway, must go, tempus fugit.

Yeah, Carpe Diem is really well known, particularly so if you've ever seen Dead Poet's Society or Sky Sports Rugby League coverage.

I reckon Nigel got it from the former - apparently it's amongst his top three Robin Williams films.

It was the motto at my school so I certainly know what it means.

I'm not calling you a lier or anything, but I have it on good authority that his top three are actually:

1. Patch Adams
2. Flubber
3. Jumanji

No shit.

Could we make this a weekly fixture perhaps, Gunny Fishcake coming along and being simultaneously thick and patronising? What's your lesson this week, Mr Fishcake?

The phrase "c'est la vie" comes from the french for "that's life".

Well I never.

I'm not willing to enter into a protracted argument about this but I know for a fact he found Patch Adams to be overly sentimental and doesn't regarded it anything more than an 8/10 relative to other films in the Williams canon.

Pretty sure it comes from B*witched rather than having anything to do with Michael Aspel.
