Assists

by TBM » 20 Jan 2014 15:52

I heard on the radio on Saturday that McCleary now has 13 (i think) assists this season.....the next player after him is Pog on 4

It shows how important McCleary is to our team this season but hasn't been getting much limelight

That might be because he is our best midfielder, play him regularly and he will deliver

1. He's been available all season as opposed to McAnuff, Drenthe, HRK, Obita (who wasn't being selected at the start) and Blackman (who was rotating between wing a striker)

2. He has a fantastic cross

3. He is benefitting from playing with Gunter with whom he has a great partnership

4. Arguably he is our only real winger (with the exception of Drenthe who has been unfit, injured or shit depending on the match. Sometimes all 3) Obita sees himself in the centre of the pitch as does HRK and that appears to be Jobis best position too. Blackman is a striker so that leaves Gareth holding down the winger role all by himself unless Drenthe has a miraculous recovery soon. Wingers jobs are to run and get assists. Hence the assists.

How many assists does Obita have? It must be at least 2 right? 3 if forcing a handball last game counts?

The most impressive thing about this stat is, IMO, that it's not just inflated by the number of set pieces he takes like previous leading assiters (horrible phrase).

I'm not sure I trust the reliability of assis stats without seeing how they've attributed them all but I do think McCleary has been our most dangerous attacking threat, and consistently so. What I don't understand is how little he's been used by McDermott and then Adkins when he looks so dangerous.

Yup

and the fact nobody seems to be raving about him. For me, he's in the top 3 for player of the season, along with Pog and Gunter

Yep, although no one will vote for him or Gunts because of their 'friendship'. Reading fans really need to grow up.

I make it 10 but I keep seeing 12 so I'm not sure where you got 13 from but 10 or more is a great contribution so far.

McCleary seems to have been devastating in some games and virtually non-existant in others. Whoscored.com have him on 10 assists.

Watching the highlights of the last game I noticed two things about his play in particular.
Goal 1: He took on the defender and gave him a torrid time, only to perhaps try to hold on to the ball a little too long, fall over and have ALF somewhat fortuitously pounce on the loose ball and bury it.

Goal 3: He did the defender with a sublime piece of skill shaping to try to move the ball one side of the defender and just easing it past him the other way instead. And then a piece of incredible unselfishness setting it on a plate for ALF.

I'd argue that the first goal isn't really an assist as there is no intent to pass the ball there, but I suspect he's picked one up for it. I may be wrong. He's been noted for three for that game and I'm not sure I can see how he's got them off the top of my head.

I did say "I think" in my OP but it was from the fact he got 3 on Saturday

So maybe the official site hasn't been updated yet and it is on fact 12

Yes but I notice you always like to pick faults(not that he was perfect) in his game and G up Jobi so lets just be glad he gave a good performance as did the whole team. By the way did Blackman get an assist?

Its cool buddy, I noticed it was 7 before the Bolton game on the OS site so maybe they only gave him two sat hence making 9.
Even though the official reading twitter feed stated he got 3 sat

I like to balance things, weigh up all sides. I'm not saying he had a bad game. As far as I'm concerned McAnuff and McCleary aren't even remotely in competition for places. Yes I'm not a huge fan of McCleary because I've thought in the past he could be more consistent, do more defensively and that he's been a bit too selfish. But there's no argument that when he's on his game he's fantastic. And yes, McAnuff is one of my favourite players, he gets an unfair press on here so I try to counter that a bit.

Re: Blackman - he's mentioned in the commentary as assisting himself, but not scored with an assist.

I didn't think you were saying he had a bad game, how could you?
But I do notice this about you when ever you talk about him.
By the way I thought jobi was very good sat and worked hard defensively but I would want him to be more consistent going forward seeing as he is a winger.
But I still thought he was excellent
As for McCleary being selfish...hmmm
So I guess we'll agree to disagree. :)
