The number 10

by PistolPete » 30 Mar 2014 12:40

It seems every team at the top of the premier league uses a 'number 10'.

Silva, Mata, Cazorla, Kagawa, Hazard, Willian, Ozil, Lallana etc etc. Liverpool are perhaps an exception?

In the championship the number 10 is less common, but of course there was a young Icelandic player - I forget his name - who showed the value of the position when good enough and used well.

Here on HobNob we've been crying out for a replacement, the cult status that Marek Matejovski holds shows how much we want a skilful, attacking player to play between midfield and attack.

So my question is, is this what we've been missing? (Injuries have been far and away the main problem imo)

Is MacAnuff this player? Is it Tanner or Jake Taylor? Surely Drenthe has the ability?

Matejovski was a different class and never really fitted in. Derby away when we got relegated showed how he could run a game.

Yet strangely Seoul for one season seemed to do that job fairly well - I was never convinced by him but happily proved wrong on many occasions - still love watching the west ham away free kick in YouTube where it looked like he had mucked it up.

Gylfi was quality.

I don't think Jobi can do that role although happy to be proved wrong.
Drenthe should be able to but is too inconsistent and lacks end product.
I'd like to see Taylor or tanner given a go in the same way Gylfi was given a chance.
Guthrie has the ability if he was prepared to play in a more advanced role.

That was a quality away game. "Seol! Seol will tear you apart! Again!"

Tanner will be Reading's next no. 10.

You are absolutely right, but never in a million years should it be McAnuff. He is dreadful in a central role, doesn't see or play the first time pass/through ball, and he desperately lacks composure. Drenthe would be the obvious choice at the moment IF he calmed down and looked up, instead of charging around like a bull in a china shop and offering very little as a result. Next season I would like to see more of Jake Taylor (if he signs a new contract when we can afford to offer one...) or Tanner.

McAnuff isn't a goalscorer, which rules him out. Taylor hasn't really shown the quality. Drenthe ought to be up to the job, but just doesn't deliver. Matejovsky and Guthrie are / were more deep laying playmakers.

Tanner might make the step up. Or Kelly. You need extraordinary composure and awareness to play the role.

Apart from the one he played for Pog that led to our goal against Barnsley.
