Can Clarkie improve the squad?

by Cookie » 19 Dec 2014 13:15

A few players have always looked good to me but for other reasons not to the manager.

Edwards, Guthrie and Blackman to name three, have all shown match-winner potential at various times but haven't developed into the players they could be.
They've all got slightly difficult personalities, particularly Guthrie, but then those types abound in successful teams.

I'm sorry, but when has Ryan Edwards shown match-winning potential?

Wasn't aware that Edwards had a difficult personality. The only thing I've heard is some players at Perth were unhappy because his dad kept selecting him ahead of them and it allegedly wasn't on merit.

Guthrie's problem for the last year has been injuries. Nothing else. And regardless of whether you rate him or hate him it's pretty clear his career is all but over because of it. Certainly here.

Edwards - lightw8
Guthrie - big ego, stroppy, injured
Blackman - no effort, generally shit

The only one that could potentially improve under Clarke is Blackman imo.

I'm sorry, but when has Nick Blackman shown match-winning potential?

He doesn't pass well or cross well. He's prepared to take shots from 30 yards out, and almost always misses (apart from a good consolation goal in a pre-season game against Swansea City).

At the start of the season he performed very much like a 2008/09 Kebe. Not been quite the same since we slumped and he came back from his injury.

Steve Clarke first task is to find a first team 11 with a formation that works and most importantly defends better. By defends I include strikers as well.

Just so people know, whenever Ryan Edwards gets mentioned as a hot prospect, it should be taken into account that he's very good in Football Manager 2015, so I don't know if this Ryan Edwards is being confused with the IRL Ryan Edwards.

There's no place for Guthrie now we have Norwood.

I've always liked Blackman, but have to admit, he's never shown he's up to this level. Entertaining player, though.

Yes, they've all three shown glimpses, I was just wondering whether Steve Clarke could bring out that side of them.

I should hope and expect so seeing as he is more a coach than a manager. It is what this squad needs right now. I hope too that he isn't a Mr nice guy to the players, I think this may have been Nigel's biggest failing.

and for some, in a Matt Mills kind've way, his (Reading at least) career was all but over, even well before his injuries

Today for the first time in a while I'm really looking forward to going to football today. I was never an Adkins fan from the beginning and can count on one hand the amount of times I came home from a game having seen a great performance, the only one that springs to mind is Fulham this year and that was against ten men. I went to Brentford and Bournemouth away this year and was so angry in the way we just gave up and seemed to be happy with a defeat! Today is going to be a tough game and I expect we get beaten by a team much better than us, but I'm sure Steve Clarke will get them playing for the shirt again and wanting to win games of football, that is all we can really ask for, a desire and passion to play for Reading FC
