Appreciation for Jem Karacan

by Mr.Swainey » 11 Apr 2015 19:28

Firstly, well done to Jem for leading out the team today as captain for the first time. Nice to see, like Alex Pearce before him, an Academy graduate being nurtured into a captain. More importantly, his promotion of the #RyanRoyals campaign deserves a big round of applause. A real credit to the football club and I for one hope he will get his contract extended.

Apparently Jem has donated his earnings from the game today to The Avenue.

It would be an utter travesty to not renew his contract but keep the likes of Akpan and Norwood on our books

Tough choices are necessary unfortunately. Jem's a good player, but he's barely played in 2 years now and his injuries may have affected him. We can let him go for free, but we'd have to find a buyer or pay off the contracts for Akpan or Norwood. So whilst I'd rather have Karacan than Akpan, if it's a choice between them because money is as tight as I worry it could be... I wouldn't hesitate in wishing Jem well at another club and not giving him a new contract.

There can be no question about giving Jem an extension. Maybe it will be a 1 year deal to let him prove his long term fitness but there is no way we cannot afford to give him that.
Agree that there is a small matter of honouring contracts that mean other players may be retained.

Reckoned the only reason he played today was due to the him being the face of the Ryan's Royals thing. Don't expect to see him starts another game this season.

Out of interest what has happened to Williams since his suspension. Did he get injured on international duty?

Presumably that's the same reason Cox and Ferdinand got a run out.

Aren't Cox and ferdinand both injured Peps? Just seemed too much of a coincidence for me, especially making him captain (accept he's club captain before you shout me down on that front). Happy to be proved wrong dave royal, but think Ian royal might be closer to reality

No great detective work to suggest there was at least some link between Jem playing and Ryan's Royals. Clark said post match that Jem has been ready to play for a while but they have been very careful with him and today seemed a good time to get him involved. Not a token gesture, just a happy piece of timing.

Jem has gone up in my estimations 200% in the past few months.

Today, being the culmination of something great that he has worked hard on, might well have played some part in his team selection today......but his actual performance was a good enough reason to start him again.

Not getting the love of Jem's performance today. Thought the game largely passed him by. His touch hasn't improved and he looked quite slow. Willing to give him the benefit of the doubt due to the length of his layoff, but isn't an improvement on Williams. Still hope to keep Chalobah next season.

Where is Williams at the moment?

I thought he was one of the stand out performers today. Considering he had to do the defensive work of 2 players (Hal didn't bother as usual) yet we still dominated in midfield is impressive. He was one of the only players with movement off the ball into space. Too many of our players choose the backwards pass but he was constantly driving us forward.

Considering hiw little football he has played this season, I thought he had a great game. A couple of missed passes, but on the whole he was one of the better players today. I would gladly see him start the next couple of games, including Wembley, especially if Williams isn't fit.

Going forwawrd, I think it would be a travesty if the club do not offer him a contract. Based on previous seasons and his work on and off the pitch, the club need to keep him. He is a credit to RFC and a credit to football in general.

Mention for the ref as well. Brought a ref shirt and presented it to Ryan prematch. Nice.

He actually spent most of the game covering for Mackie, not HRK.

How could anyone not think Jem had a good game today?

I thought he was superb, and far more useful as a team player
than the flashier Williams
