FA Cup Semi Final Arsenal Upsets.

by Pearcehegone » 14 Apr 2015 03:32

Thought I would look back to see Arsenals recent (ish) FA Cup semi final history and if it offers us some hope for Saturday. And it does...

2014 - Arsenal 1-1 Wigan
2009 - Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal
2005 - Arsenal 3-0 Blackburn
2004 - Man Utd 1-0 Arsenal
2003 - Arsenal 1-0 Shef Utd
2002 - Arsenal 1-0 Middlesbrough
2001 - Arsenal 2-1 Spurs
1999 -Giggs 2-1 Arsenal
1998 - Arsenal 1-0 Wolves
1993 - Arsenal 1-0 Spurs
1991 - Spurs 3-1 Arsenal
1983 - Man utd 1-0 Arsenal
1980 - Arsenal 1-0 Liverpool (after 3 draws)
1979 - Arsenal 2-0 Wolves
1978 - Arsenal 3-0 Orient
1973- Sunderland 2-1 Arsenal 1
1972- Arsenal 2-1 Stoke

If you calculate the years Arsenal lost a semi final since the seventies (1973+1983+1991+1999+2004+2009) we get 11959. If we subtract this year (2015) from 11959 we get 9944. Now if we take 9944 and calculate how many years 9944 days are, we get just over 27 years. And what happened 27 years ago? One of the biggest FA CUP upsets of all time. The year Wimbledon won in 1988 & not only that but where did they win their semi final against Luton Town? White Hart Lane.

I believe

Good skills :D

I also have a theory of why we will win, we beat Parky in the Quarters, we'll beat McD in the semi so that we can beat Brendan in the final. Think yours is more scientifically sound though.

There were probably reasons for those defeats unrevealed by bald stats.

The relevance now is that Arsenal have won eight games on the spin and are second in the Premier League.

We've scored an average of 3 goals in our Wembley appearances, In our last game against Arsenal we scored 5 goals.

Nice piece about our oldest fan Ciss Platten in the Grauniad today: http://www.theguardian.com/football/201 ... g-arsenal- fa-cup-semi-final

She mentions how she came to dislike Arsenal back in the 1920's. This reminded me of a childhood holiday about 1970. My dad was an Arsenal fan from their glory days in the 1930's; the other guests included a middle-aged couple from Walsall. The husband took great delight in repeatedly recalling Walsall's 2-0 Cup win against the Gooners in 1933. He could recite their whole team from memory... my dad spent the rest of the week avoiding him...

Hopefully, we can score more goals than Arsenal tomorrow. We did managed that in 1972 - pity Stuart Morgan's bullet header went into our net rather than ours or we would have beaten the double winners 2-1.

IIRC Pat Rice's shot only went in thanks to a huge deflection as well.

Morgan's header was superb though.....

We had an 18 year old playing centre back that day.
