First RFC player to 5 yellows in a season ...

by strap » 20 Sep 2015 18:21

Wonder if some one can help me? I reckon Oliver Norwood, (that renowned midfield enforcer!), received his 5th yellow of the season in our 10th game of the season. One of his 5 was in the LC, with 4 in the League, so does that mean he gets a 1 match ban already?

Bizarrely, Oliver Norwood is NOT the quickest to 5 yellows for us. That other well known enforcer, James Lambert, (I kid you not), managed to get 5 yellows in the first 7 games of 1997/98, and a total of 9 for the season.

Andy Gurney managed 5 in the first 11 games of 1999/00, and Barry Hunter managed 6 in 9 consecutive games later in the same season. Peter Grant managed 4 yellows in 4 games, and followed in the next game with a red for 2 yellows. He did miss one game in that sequence though.

Phil Parkinson managed 14 yellows and a straight red in 2001/02.

We had 6 different players red carded in 2007/08 and the next year also 6 reds but by 4 players. The year after that 7 reds by 5 different players. In 2010/11 we had 5 different reds, and in 2013/14 we were back up to 6 reds for 5 players.

In 2012/13 we only had 2 players getting 5 yellows. Last season's worst yellow was Obita with 11 (another unlikely enforcer).

Andy Bernal managed to get 2 reds in the first 4 games of 1996/97, as well as another later in the season.

Does anyone know of a website that might show yellows and reds prior to 1996/97 as my disciplinary records before that season are very sparse. Soccerbase has nothing before then, and ENFA only seems to note reds.

Many thanks for any help!

Obita's no surprise - he might not have much of a tackle but he's got a right gob on him.

Obita's issue is his tactical fouling, he gets caught out diving in too soon and has to do a silly trip or something to stop the counter attack.

Didn't realise Norwood had that many bookings, I thought Tshibola was the only one on four.

I am sure your right, Norwood appears to have been booked 5 times(even though the FA website haven't listed him as awaiting suspension yet) and the league cup counts as a First team competitive match.

So he should be suspended

As well as showing those suspended/due suspension, the FA site also has an option for displaying those "one caution away".

Only Sa shows in the first list and Tshibola in the second, so something appears to be a bit screwy.

Happily the offish site does have Norwood on 5, so hopefully the club sec is paying attention.

Yes, just looked at this and they seem to have both Norwood and Tshibola on 4 each?? I will double check alternative source (soccerbase maybe) to see ...

Yep, 5.

The Clubs' discipline stats separate the league and cup, for some reason without also totalling them.
They do indicate Norwood has 5 yellows (4 league, 1 cup).

FA website says data is updated after receiving referees report. These probably just going in. FA rules say suspension starts immediately so possible Norwood could miss Everton. Hope so because we need him for Burnley

But Norwood wasn't/isn't showing in the "one caution away" list either....

EDIT. He is now, AND it's saying Everton is next game.

http://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/suspensions

So it looks like one of the previous ones may not have been recorded and as far as the FA is concerned he is currently on 4.

As I said earlier, maybe the Bristol City one has not been recorded yet

Was Norwood actually booked against Derby? I wasn't sure at the time whether the booking was for him or Gunter.

Sporting Life seem pretty certain it was Norwood - although they use the PA data for their text commentary, as do most on-line text commentaries, so if the mistake is at PA, then it does get replicated a bit.

Soccerbase.com also have Norwood getting a yellow v Derby, as does the OS, so pretty sure that ones pukka.

I guess we'll find out soon enough!

And as i said, it just updated. Reasonable to presume as a result of receiving the City report, no? :|

Just in case anyone is remotely interested, Sporting Life and BBC "credited" Norwood with a booking in the 90th minute v Derby, when the OS shows Gunter - which agrees with the League site.

Also, SL and BBC missed Danny WIlliams yellow on 83 at Portsmouth.

I know that was coming between you and your rest - well it was certainly for me.

So Norwood and Tshibola are both on 4 bookings. Guess that means were likely to have them serving suspensions at some point in October.

Saturday's matchday programme shows Norwood with 5 (including Derby) and on the OS the Derby match report shows it too. Very strange.

Worst case scenario, he was supposed to be suspended for the Everton game and we played him, no points to deduct so would only result in a fine.

That said I very much doubt the Reading club officials would make such a basic error.
