Seeing as the Oliveira rumour has got a few people moist, what is the most excited you've got about a rumour whether or not it came true? (Bonus points for where and when you heard the rumour and/or other extenuating details)

There's been a few over the years, but to start you off, I'll give you Asamoah Gyan (while drunk at Notting Hill carnival)

Seem to remember the whole board going into meltdown over a rumoured £10m bid for Gylfi.

Not got excited about any rumour for about 15 years, not since the club spread one about signing an exciting international footballer and it turned out to be Omar Daley.

Mine was the Royston Drenthe saga, if you remember it was a rumour for ages, and carried on and on, I couldnt beleive it when we finally signed him , an ex Real Madrid player , vagely remember shouted out the car window a massive yes when my mate called me to say we´ve signed him...shame how he turned out in the end

A rumour I got excited about wasn't about a player that didnt come but one that did.
I remember we'd just signed Mass Sarr and my dad turned to me before his 1st game and said "Apparently he make Gilkes look like a slouch"

Not a rumour that got me excited but one that I miss. For about a 10-15 year period every time the manager job was available, Laurie Sanchez was always a rumoured candidate.

When bigmike had the whole board by the jaffas (summer 2012) by claiming to be ITK, and saying that we were going to sign someone that would cause a "board meltdown".

Van der Vaart was a good one that never came through, and knowing we almost had Joleon Lescott was always quite an exciting thought (who I imagine history could be quite kind to given Citeh's recent record with centre halves). Also Maurice Evans once said that Robin Friday cold come back if he mended his ways.

Vanity signings like Drenthe just fill me with dread: I can't believe that anybody truly thought he would be a success here.

I rather enjoyed the Steven Reid saga. Linked with him every window then got him as soon as he retired.

Robbie Fowler was a good one. All the names that came out after our first foray into the Prem ("we could have had Hazard! we could have had Fellaini!") of those that Coppell was looking over.

Also love the lower league ones that crop up occasionally. Linked with a Dave Tarpey type.

Oliveira has been fun.


van der Vaart was good as that got a few people like "oh aye!?" , Jaap has some influence, followed by Gyan.

Sissoko was fun as well.
