The players in the past may have been stealing a living but Dellor and Williams are stealing their share of easy money at the BBC. Both total planks and hysteria mongers when it suits them to be. Thought he did as well as could be expected with the interview in the circumstances. Admitted moving Rinomhota to Full back to accommodate Baker. Had to change things when it wasn’t working and the performance improved. Personally I would have left Rinomhota where he was but hopefully it’s a lesson learned. Thought he answered well when explaining he only wants keeper to play short when it’s on and to use common sense when it’s not. Surely that can’t be too difficult for the players to understand. Anyway, as others have posted our season won’t be defined by losing away at Derby. There are some much more important games coming up. Hopefully we can get the unnecessary tinkering out of the way now and move on to better things.

You have to listen to it to make up your own mind. It really is open to interpretation......Im mystified what he was trying to achieve today.

The Barrow substitution was bizarre. He seemed to have Derby all over the place down that side at times.

Gomes is learning as well. He’s learning English Second Division football which is a hell of a lot different to the PL and what he’s used to elsewhere. He’s still learning about the squad of players he’s inherited some of whom may well not be up to what Gomes wants either technically or mentally. Therefore mistakes will be made and, indeed, today he, IMO, made a total hash of the team selection.

As to his interview he does sound like he’s out of his depth as he’s saying things like Reading controlled the second half and controlled the game at ManU but that’s a worry as it suggests he doesn’t realise that ManU can let a club like Reading play and teams leading 2-0 are going to sit back and let you have more of the ball.

He needs to wake up to the fact that controlling a game and yet losing it is immaterial and certainly someone needs to make it quite clear to him that Reading are not going to get any time whatsoever on the ball when they go to Bolton so telling Jaakkola etc. to play out from the back is going to be suicidal. So he needs to tell them to look to go long unless it is clear the opposition are not pressing high.

And that’s the other thing. If you’re a proponent of that passing style then surely the first thing you do is establish clearly what to do when being pressed high is which what an awful lot of opponents will try to do to counter it. Doesn’t look like that’s being told to the players or, if it is, it’s very poor decision making by the players concerned.

And perhaps it is the players at fault. If you’re being pressed then why on earth even give Jaakkola the short pass option?

The point about the keeper playing it short only when it’s on is a relief to hear. Jaakkola is brain dead. He constantly plays it short and puts the defenders under pressure. Absolutely clueless. Just clear it long FFS.

And it’s right to be critical. Reading does not have the time for experimenting, the same side as last week should have started and it was felt he may have been on to something and the players would have had more of an understanding of each other’s game and what was being asked of them.

And while games like Derby, Leeds, WBA etc. won’t define the season at the moment, another month of the same old kak that’s been plaguing the club this season and they quite definitely will be so Reading have to be able to at least give as good as they get.

I would if I'd felt he'd done something wrong like shoving a midfielder to right back when there were three full backs on the bench. Big difference between filling in there for 30 to 60 minutes and starting.

Anyway, one player change today. Last week Baker came on 60 mins for Richards, and this week he started instead of Richards. That’s it. The other 10 all started last week. Not sure I’d have played Rino at RB today myself, although he has filled in there well in the past.
Btw, I’m not much for interviews, and never have been. Most know me for that, under all managers, and I remain consistent. Don’t put much sway in what he said today, or what Clement said, or the previous guy, and so on.
