Almost a year since their last visit Wigan return to the Madejski. That game was very close to being a disaster for Reading with only very late goals saving the day so let’s hope Reading can accomplish a successful outcome a little more comfortably this time round.
Wigan arrive on the back of only 1 defeat in their last 6 games which has seen 3 wins including a 1-0 at Leeds so this is not going to be easy in the slightest. They do concede goals though with 6 going in their net in the last 4 games but equally that does mean they carry fight and attacking threat so must not be underestimated.
Chey Dunkley is the leading goalscorer with 6 and Chey is a defender which, to me, points to Wigan being decent at set pieces. Kieffer Moore is next with 5 goals and there’s few 2s and 1s scattered around the rest of their squad plus Josh Windass on 4.
Kieran Dowell will miss the game for Wigan through injury while Reading now have Ovie Ejaria rated doubtful for the game on top of the current list of casualties.
This, and the visit from Barnsley on the Saturday following, is going to be a key game. Failure to win either of these two will more than likely put this board into meltdown while winning both would more or less end the league season from Reading’s perspective and enable MB to go into to full experimentation mode. As we know though Reading just don’t make things easy for themselves but let’s just hope they can get it right this time.
Referee
It’s Geoff Eltringham who still hasn’t managed to referee a Reading home win though, surprisingly, he’s only taken charge of 2 games at the Mad Stad.

Historically
Wigan are one of the very few clubs that Reading have played in all four divisions. There have been twenty two previous visits from the Latics for league points and more often than not the outcome is decisive as there’s only been two draws (both 1-1) in that time.
Of the remaining twenty games Reading have won thirteen to Wigan’s seven but Wigan have won 3 of the last 5 games played.
