The best game you've ever seen?

by Simmops » 13 Dec 2020 22:50

What game sticks out in your memory's the most as the best you've ever seen? Doesn't have to be a Reading win, but just a great game.

Was it dramatic? Heartbreaking? A great goal or moment?

My top games I've seen :

RFC 3-2 Palace. Lita scoring 3 including THAT overhead kick. The double penalties with double misses.

Arsenal 4-0 Reading. The only time I've ever seen us genuinely played off the park and dicked .watching Henry in the flesh was something else

Reading 5-7 Arsenal. Don't need to say anything as to why.

Reading 1-1 Man United. Going toe to toe with the best team in the country, Ronaldo and Rooney.

Thought that 4-3 was 3-2, great game I grant you.

That 5-7 was an utter nightmare I never want to be reminded of.

I’ll offer the 6-0 V WHU and the long ago 4-3 comeback v Plymouth which was actually terrible for the first hour.

Elsewhere the miracle of Istanbul and Citehs AGUERRRRRRO win over QPR to clinch the title.

I really enjoyed the Forest 3-4 Reading game must have been about 10 years ago when we were both chasing the play-offs.

A couple of older ones

Reading 3 Forest 3 in 1998 (?)
Watched with a couple of mates in a Forest packed pub - situation made it more special.
Lambert dribble, Primus header, Stone miss.

Best live would be
Reading 2 Wigan 1 play off semi.
Forster knocks in the rebound.

Blackpool 0 Reading 4 in 1994.

Absolutely played them off the park. Got clapped off by the home fans.

Tranmere 1 Reading 3 PO Semi Final 1995. Total football.

Blackburn 3 Reading 3 2007. Last game of the season, party atmosphere and an end to end game.

Only one for me after watching for 60 years. The draw at Leicester that took us up to the top league for the first time in our history.

blimey, I have been away for 30 years and yet have been to many of those "memorable" games, including some random ones.

The 4-3 win at Forest for example.

I was also at Wealdstone (1-2) and Chesterfield (1-7) which sometimes get wheeled out as classic games.

OK, my additions:

Tranmere 5-0 (inc. Friday's goal): someone had to say it
2-3 v BHA and 4-1 v Swindon in 76-77. Amazing atmosphere
FA Cup semi v Arsenal. Arsenal were still a good team in those days and we played them off the park for long periods.

Another one for me was the 2-1 win at Derby, forget how long ago it was but it was a bloody miracle the game even went ahead, the away coaches even had to turn around I believe so the away end was quite sparse. I was there because I was studying at Derby Uni at the time, it was made all the sweeter for a late Long winner.

He also came and gave his shirt to the crowd, I remember because I was in the huddle that he approached but a bigger guy barged me out the way so I didn't see who got the shirt.

I think all of my top 3 didn't involve Reading:

1. Milan 3-4 Inter October 2006
2. England 2-2 Argentina World Cup 1998
3. Germany 1-5 England 2001

The top 2 I travelled to without tickets and went via touts outside the ground. Something you really cant do now and just adds a bit more to the overall buzz. I don't think ill ever attend games like this again, just not the same matchday experience these days and off limits to anyone without priority access to tickets.

That’s a good shout. Went to that while I was at uni in Lincoln, was a brilliant day and a brilliant game.

Reading 5 Tranmere 0 in '76 - Defied convention and destroyed a promotion rival; and yes, the Friday goal was as good as people say.
Reading 4 Plymouth 3 in '85 - The most improbable comeback after being outplayed for 65 mins. Limbs.
Tranmere 1 Reading 3 in '95 - Perfect away performance.
Blackpool 0 Reading 4 in '94 - Another perfect away performance acknowledged by the Blackpool fans.
Reading 4 Wolves 2 in '94 - An emotonal Elm Park in first post-McGhee game. The reverse pass from Quinn to Gilkesy makes me moist.
Reading 2 Bolton 1 in '95 - The most rabid atmosphere I can ever recall at Elm Park. A fantastic night. The Tilehurst went hatstand when Nogs scored the winner.

I go back to 1971 and agree - you can't beat that Tranmere play off game, given what was riding on it, they'd won something like 21 out of their 23 home games too during the normal season

I'd also add the 4-0 win at Blackpool the previous season and a 4-3 v Plymouth 1985-86...the 3-0 down with 20 mins to go game....35 years ago to the day just about.

The thing with the 4-3 over Plymouth, we were absolutely shite for 65 minutes. Great comeback yes but great game, no.

Branfoot's tactical switch turned the game. Burvill on for an ineffective Gilkes and Bremner pushed up front. Senior and Mad Max terrorized Plymouth from that point. Despite the scoreline of 0-3, it quickly turned into a siege.

I was at everyone of those matches.

Personal favourite has already been mentioned, PO semi-final against Wigan. What a rollercoaster.

Other than that, any victory over Preston North End or Portsmouth.

REAding 3 Arsenal 0:FA CUP 4th round 1972

The great double winning arsenal side featuring Wilson, McLintock, George and a host of other names. Over 25,000 crammed into Elm Park, walls collapsing etc etc . We more than matched up to them.

Of course the official records show this as a 2-1 win to Arsenal but as we scored all the goals I prefer to claim it as a victory. Closest we have got to actually beating them !
