Name the Game

by Franchise FC » 10 Aug 2023 11:46

I've recently been scanning old photos so that we can free up some space in the garage.

Amongst them I have found one that I'll try to upload, although being the complete luddite that I am, that may take a while.

I'm hoping one of you guys, once it's posted, will be able to identify it for me.

Here goes .....

Mid Sussex Royal Wokingham Town old ground?

That's a really good shout.

Comparing my photo with the Google images suggests we may have a winner

Only question ... why the hell would I be taking a picture of a friendly ?

I don't remember going to one of those, but then I'm struggling to remember my name some days

It’s between 84/85 and 86/87 and MSR looks spot on with the Wokingham shout tbh.

Could be:?

A pre-season friendly between Wokingham and neighbours Reading, the Royals (or Biscuitmen as they were then) were preparing for a Football League Division 3 (now League 1) championship winning season while Wokingham finished 10th in the Isthmian Premier Division.

On the subject of Wokingham Town, I've just read that they merged to become Wokingham and Embrook FC in 2004.
Had no idea, shows how long ago it was since I last looked them up.

Do they still play in Wokingham between the two railway lines or did that get re-developed?

And lined up alongside Neil Webb, for the same team v Woodley Hammers at the start of that season and I scored two in a 4-4 draw -

I bet Neil still talks about that now….

Maidstone played at Watling Street in Dartford when Reading went there, given the fact the photo is taken in daylight it won't be Maidstone as Reading played the cup replay there on a Wednesday evening in December.

Therefore it must be a pre-season friendly at Wokingham at some point in the mid to late 80s.

I think the original photo is taken from the stand in the above but can't remember if that was where the Wine place and Oakey Drive is now or if it was on the other side.

Can spot Mark White (now 64) (or it might be Steve Wood (now 60)) and Colin Bailie (now 59 and last heard of as being a policeman in Cumbria) in the foreground and Hicksie, super Trev and Stevie Richardson further out.

Good spots, but I think it might be Gilkesy in the background.

I recognised it as Wokingham pretty quickly, but have no idea why we are playing in a change strip, when not only is there no clash between Wokingham's gold and our kit of the era, but the away kit is almost a clash.
