MATCHWATCH : Exeter City (a)

by Sutekh » 23 Aug 2023 11:33

When : Saturday August 26 2023, 3pm
Where : St James Park, Stadium Way, Exeter, EX4 6PX
Capacity : 8,197

Reading take their burgeoning season of hope down to Devon for a visit to Exeter next, their first trip to that part of the country for almost 30 years, and it couldn't be a brighter trip for all those going despite the current miserable away league record of 0 wins and 11 defeats from the last 13 games played and just 5 (FIVE) goals scored.

While Reading are looking confident and seem to be playing well, the current run of two successive wins should be tempered by the fact Reading were at home on both occasions against what turned out to be pretty limited opposition and Exeter should provide much more than that after their 7 point haul from their first 4 games. Their previous home games have seen a draw against one of the favourites in Blackpool and a win over Crawley in the League Cup. And, if you were wondering, Reading last managed three successive league wins at this same stage of the season last year when wins against Blackburn, Middlesbrough and then at Millwall lifted them to the lofty position of the best team in the whole of the football league.

St James Park is what you'd call a traditional lower league ground with fans right down by the pitch on all four sides so won't be for the fainthearted player. By the look of things Exeter will be a very difficult side to break down having conceded just 1 goal in the league (at Portsmouth) so Reading will have to be clever on how they approach this and Selles will need to make sure the homework is done, another Port Vale will put everything right back to square one and we really don't want to see that happening.

Former Royal Pierce Sweeney will be leading the Exeter defence, while Viljami Sinisalo is someone who tends to catch the eye in many games. Their goal threat at the moment is in the form of Jack Aitchison and Demetri Mitchell but at this level I think there is more reliance on a team ethic than names and stars so Reading need to be respectful of everyone while looking to impose their game in their way on opponents so this is going to be a very big game for the club.

Luckily injuries seem to be holding steady with just Smith and Ejaria the main casualties, their may be a doubt over Knobs (spell checked) though after seemingly taking a head injury against Stevenage but other than that I don't think there's any real reason to change the side that played in that game

Historically

Exeter were very regular opponents of Reading right up to the last time the clubs last met in the league back in 1993/94. In all there have been 80 games between the two sides and every one of them has been in the league.

St James Park hasn't been too bad for Reading down the years with 16 wins achieved which is only 2 less than Exeter themselves have managed which leaves just 6 draws amongst the 40 games played. While I don't think the game will be quite the roller coaster of the last visit (a 6-4 Reading win which at one point saw Exeter fight back to 4-4 from 4-1 down at half time (see highlights at the link below)) now is as good as any that the club have had to end the miserably cr@p run of away league form that it is currently suffering.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and go
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Good stuff

Can assume no Wing, Knibbs, Smith or Ejaria based on the training

Button
Mbengue Abbey Bindon Carson
Camara Hutch Savage Mukairo
Vickers Ehibhatiomhan

CBC, Yiadom, Elliot, Dean, McIntyre, Carroll, Azeez

Actually that’s bloody tough to choose. NGW prob deserves a place on the bench. Rushesha likewise. Good problems to have

As the RFC ticket allocation got sold out I am taking advantage of the Exeter hospitality package to go and watch this one.

I will just have to keep quiet "when" we score, so I don't receive a Devon lynching.

No I think you should take your chances and go nuts, really rub it in to the Exeter supporters.

Please report back.

I won't be in hospitality, but will be in the home end. Polite applause all round will be the order of the day.

I reckon they'll be quite a friendly atmosphere there, bit similar to Yeovil when they were in the Championship. Lovely bunch of supporters.

I moved to Devon a while back and so I have been to see Exeter FC a couple of times and you are right that they are a friendly bunch. Exeter rugby is also great fun. Managed to get completely smashed at an Exeter - Quins match last year as they have often have a fantastic after match party. I somehow managed to get to the station and a train back home!

There's going to be 1 minute's applause held in the 48th minute of the game on Saturday in celebration of Eamonn Dolan.

Seems ok to me, maybe bring Elliot in for Hutch potentially in midfield if I was to make any changes, although understandable given Hutch played very well last week. Other than that think that may end up being the team/squad.

I would like to see Dean given a start, have Bindon on the bench for this one.

I personally see no reason to change the team, other for injury/fitness reasons. If Knibbs is unavailable, as suggested, I'd give Mukairo a go (although I expect we'd see Azeez starting before him). If Carroll and NGW are mentally in the right place to play, I'd have them on the bench.

NathStPaul I would like to see Dean given a start, have Bindon on the bench for this one.

I think Dean will start against Ipswich on Tuesday(?), with McIntyre as the other CB. I reckon the team against Ipswich will be something like:

CBC
Yiadom (Abrefa if fit) - Dean - McIntyre - John Clarke (or possibly NGW as above)
Azeez - Rushesha - Elliott - Mukairo
Ehib (or possibly Carroll) - Vickers

Subs: Button/Bouzanis; Mbengue; Bindon/Abbey; Savage/Wing; Craig; Senga; Tuma; Camara; Knibbs

The Ipswich game is really when I would expect Dean and Elliott, especially, to be given starts and would be the right situation to re-integrate NGW, Carroll, etc. in the starting XI if there's any chance of them playing for us again. You might have Rushesha at RB, with Craig (most likely) playing at CM instead, but Ipswich is when we should make changes IMO - rather than Exeter.

On the injury side I read on Twitter that Camera and Abbey missed the fans training session, hopefully precautionary

Anyone know good places to park for this? Least amount of walking possible (no I’m not lazy)

Well, I went to uni there 20 years ago and didn’t drive.

....

Howell Road car park?

You might be ok on Prince of Wales Road. That's 10 - 15 minutes walk and I don't think over much hill. You might be able to steal a residential place on Powderham Crescent.

I've asked a chum still there for recommendations.

Edit: Russell St, Exeter EX1 2BL
Parr Street Car Park - more likely to be full

I generally find Exeter parking limited and/or expensive and Exeter is busy on a Saturday. So I will go to the Honiton Road Park and Ride. The bus service to the town centre is regular and only costs a couple of quid and then I will walk up to the ground - less than a mile.

The walk will do you good.
