Players who started off good but became terrible

by Clyde1998 » 07 Jan 2025 08:15

A reverse thread of what I posted this morning as requested by Crusader Royal: players who started off their career really well, but were total duds.

I do need to think more about this, someone like Jason Roberts comes to mind. He started off completely transforming our 2011-12 promotion season, but injuries basically prevented him from playing a serious role in the Premier League season. We still gave him an additional year where he couldn't play at all due to injury - likely taking up wages which could've been used on at least one other player.

Paul McShane. Great defender to start with. Age caught up and he fell off a cliff.

Puscas has to be right up there - great in his first game and then just got worse and worse, albeit with a few glimpses of talent in a few games after that, but never lived up to the initial promise.

Mass Sarr seems obvious but Rougier was another- fantastic home debut against Swindon.

Harsh on The Rouge, he was consistently decent for us.

Drenthe was unbelievable on his debut but then was useless after that.

I feel like it should be more than a couple of games to count as starting off good.

Leroy Lita. 2 decent seasons then nothing other than 2 injury time goals in 4-0 wins.

I think he got 15 goals in his first season, with 12 in the league. Encouraging 1st season but then he went backwards.

Anyhow, someone has already mentioned Mass Sarr. End the thread.

Snowflake Royal Paul McShane. Great defender to start with. Age caught up and he fell off a cliff.

I'd apply the same to Kaspars Gorkss

Grant Brebner looked the business and then just faded away. He had all sorts of off field issues.

It was like Sarr just gave up after that wonder shot hit the bar.

The Baltic Baresi? Get out.

He's spot on. He went from best defender in the Championship to a liability via one PL season.

I remember Brebner just being quality and it being a travesty Burns let him return to Scotland for a pittance.

It was Gorkss long flowing hair that slowed him down in the PL. An inverse Samson.

Brogue John salako

my recollection of the John Salako story was that while on loan he was amazing - so much so that Pardew did a data-driven PowerPoint presentation for the Board (before such things became mainstream) to convince them to sign him permanently - with all sorts of Opta style data points (before it was a thing - just to emphasize it).

he signed permanently and immediately got the deck chair out and stopped performing...

I wouldn't even go that far. 1 decent season, 1 decent month and then pish.
Almost all of Leroy Lita's premiership goals came in a spell of about five weeks.
He scored the winner vs Middlesbrough at the start, an extra vs Derby at the end and then six between Dec 26th 2006 and Feb 3rd 2007.

Kermogant's basically the same, right?
