What records do Reading FC hold

by Lighthouse » 05 Feb 2025 13:54

In addition to the highest number of points gained in a football league season what other records do the club hold. Have just read an article which states that the first Italian to play football in England was Attalio Fresia who signed for Reading in 1913 for £17 (alas a fee beyond us now) and won one international cap. They also won the first 13 games of the league season 1985 which was a record but don’t know if it’s been beaten.

The first Italian to play football in England certainly didn't do so in 2013.

13 games won from start of season still a record.

Steve Death still holds the EFL record for successive league games without conceding a goal, that is in danger by being broken by Burnley this season. Death's record was beaten in the Premier League by Van de Sar a few tears ago

We are the only club in all 4 divisions that haven’t had a goal scored by a substitute in 2024/5.

*EDITED*

Didn't Van de Sar / Utd beat that? Which is s Premier record, not an EFL. Got it!

The only team to be promoted to the Premier League during Greenwich Mean Time.

Only team to finish second in the 2nd tier and not be promoted?

The other one which gets trotted out is the worst FA Cup record, most entires without winning the competition.

Highest league position by any club from Berkshire.

Most defeats in the FA Cup for a league side.

I think "Convey off, Hunt on" might have been a record for the most times one player has been substituted for another in league history, or at least in a season. Certainly it was some sort of record, but maybe only a club one.

Don't know for sure, but suspect we've probably had the most academy debutants of any league club since the introduction of the Elite Player Performance Plan, thanks largely to our relatively low league position.

Oldest league club in the south of England - though Palace currently lying that they are.

Equal most entries into FA Cup by a league side (we had the record when Notts C dipped out the league for a while).

Not sure that A Friesa played a first team game for Reading.

Most goals scored in a league match by a player starting the game in goal ( A Wilkie, 2).

Hard to prove this one but Marcus Hahnemann went a whole calendar year without conceding a league goal at the North Stand end of the ground.

Here's another iffy one.

Best ever goal average: 5.

1910-11 Southern League. Scored 55 conceded 11.

50% of the record for highest scoring PL game
50% of record for highest scoring League Cup game

The FA cup entries one is debateable. Presumably people are trying to say we’ve entered the cup more times than any other ‘current’ league team.
We’re the oldest club south of the Trent aren’t we ? Not in the South of England.

Doesn’t ALF have the best goals per minutes played in the PL ?

One of the Nottingham clubs is south of the Trent so the phrase usually goes ‘south of the banks of the Trent’ …

We have equal share in longest unbeaten run in second tier it’s 33 games, shared with Liverpool.

Used to have longest unbeaten home run in the league 55 games in early 1930s. Lasted til 1967. Probably still in the top five in that category.

Reading first entered the FA Cup in 1877 and have entered in every year since. Believe that only Maidenhead United can better that and Notts equal it.

Aren’t Marlow the club that can better it ? Although IIRC they have entered every year but withdrew without playing one year.
The record is really just ‘most entries in the FA Cup though’. Making it about league clubs in meaningless.
