Under 10

by Sutekh » 24 Mar 2025 10:03

Given that in a couple of months time all we might have left of the club are memories, thought I’d compile a list of the lesser (possibly many already forgotten) players who, since 1990, made under 10 league appearances in total for the club (excludes anyone currently still at Reading)…

Two others that come to mind for some reason, but don't make your list's criteria:

Peter Maté - our only ever Hungarian? 1 league cup appearance, one goal. That's a world-class goal-per-game scoring record.

Deniss Rekels - made 14 league appearances, which is about 12 more than I would have thought. Good lad though - followed him on Instagram for years as he bumped around Cyprus, Latvia and Poland, getting ever more tattooed.

Typo on first one.

Don't think Péter Máté actually played in the league.

Deniss Rekels - came out of nowhere, last minute winner vs Charlton, vanished into ether. Scrawny but looked like he'd fill you in.

Remember one of van der Kwaak's 4 appearances, an absolute horror show away to Wrexham on the opening day of the 98-99 season after we'd been relegated - conceded an own goal by miskicking a back pass in (possibly) the opening 20 minutes or so. Lost that one 0-3. Would it have been Phil Whitehead that replaced him? Scott Howie maybe?

Few more typos - the ones that jump out are Mikkel Andersen and Greg Halford.

Sal Bibbo is a clear odd-one-out in that he still managed to be a hugely significant figure for the club, by being our goalkeeping coach for a decade or so when we had a string of good goalkeepers.

Mikkel is NOT a typo…

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikkel_An ... footballer)

Presume you’re confusing him with Jokull Andresson who finally left last season. He never made a league appearance for Reading so is absent from the above list

No, it is clearly a typo. You spelled it "Anderson". It is "Andersen".

That’s some list, and some forgotten, some best forgotten, but to help kick restart the missing name thing, I’ll raise you an Andrija Novakovich (3 league games)

I remember someone telling me they'd seen him in a youth game and that he was doing to be our next great striker.

Just looked and he's now 28(!) playing on loan for Bari from Venezia, one of the coolest Serie A teams. Fair play to the lad.

yeah, was the classic ‘expected better’ Reading thing. Never really got going with us but it was well versed here of what we expected (and thought was coming our way).

Can't see Joao Virginia in the list. Easily the worst player I've ever seen for Reading other than Zane Monlouis.

When we signed Thorvaldsson I thought he'd be amazing just because he was Icelandic. Shame it didn't work out.

Carriço should've been our best player ever. Not sure what went wrong there.

Aaron Kuhl was a weird one, got rave reviews for the academy.

Felipe Araruna probably would've played a lot more if it weren't for the injuries.

Shouldn’t forgettable mistake Zat Knight be on the list?

I remember the guy in front of me, when I had a season ticket in Y26, turned up in a new team shirt with Gravenberch on it!

He also used to wear shorts to every game...

Yes! Somehow I forgot about him

Added now.

Incidentally, according to wiki, he now lives in LA and owns fragrance and real estate businesses.

We'd done so well with Martinez the previous season that I was "he's got to be good, they've done their ... "

It wasn't that his overall performance was bad, it was that he had absolute clangers in him.

I've written a few posts about 'the vortex' but the one thing is does cripple is the chances of the players coming through. It's already tough, an injury at the wrong time will do for a career. But the manager changes, has his own ideas, and 9 times out of 10 will bring in someone rather than use a youth player.

So, recent past:
Kuhl looked good, if a bit lightweight, in the appearances I saw. Likewise Tetek. I think injuries worked against player here.
I cannot understand why we didn't keep Clarke as a different type of forward player.
Saw Josh Barrett once, thought he was good.
There's got to be more examples. Have a look through the list and how many are young players, wonder where they all ended up.

One of the things I have liked the last two seasons is the approach of giving players some game time to adapt and grow. The odd mistake (Kanu, Colchester, ) but nothing really serious.

Trying to find some more absentees and was surprised to see that Joseph Mills made 15 apps.

None of Lawson D'Ath, Gozie Ugwu, Dave Mooney and Karl Sheppard made a single league appearance either.
