NO LONGER A RUMOUR: Sam Sodje

Play at the highest-level? Weren't we linked with him before?

Sporting Life SODJE TO LEAVE BEES
Brentford defender Sam Sodje is set to follow departing Bees manager Martin Allen out of the Griffin Park exit door after insisting he needs to play at the "highest level".

The 25-year-old centre-back was part of the Brentford side who suffered play-off heartache last season and the Bees' second failed promotion bid is set to prompt Sodje to go in search of a new challenge.

"Martin would not settle for second best and I am the same. Like Martin, my contract at Brentford has a year to go, but I think one or two clubs are interested in me and Brentford might welcome the fee I could fetch," Sodje told the Richmond & Twickenham Times.

"It will be up to Brentford, but I need to play at the highest level. If a club from a higher division wanted me I'd be interested, but I turned down a move to Southampton last season because I felt it wasn't right. I won't be moving just for the sake of it, but I am ambitious and want to further my career."

Sodje also revealed the break-up of the current Brentford squad, which has seen a host of players released and influential midfielder Jay Tabb placed on the transfer list, is a major driving force behind his decision to look for a new challenge.

"With Jay (Tabb) also wanting to go and several players being released, we are seeing the break-up of the team that came so close to promotion. We worked hard to get into the play-offs in the past two seasons and were so disappointed to go out in the semi-finals. I need a challenge and,

Could be a good signing if we could get him on the cheap.
Wouldn't want to pay too much money for him as I think we'd need to buy another defender as well as signing him as he's not really proven enough.

SODJE

Sodje is compared to our man Sonko. As his heading ability and his pace is outstanding. When Brentford played Sunderland in the FA Cup earlier this season he killed them, they just coulkd not get past him. He would be a great addition.

Is it really good to use Sunderland as a yardstick?

They did beat Sunderland at home, unlike the Premiership runners up and the UEFA Cup finalists.

We could afford that, worth a punt for Sodje as a 4th choice CB as well. Gazump them with £775,000

I wish I had said all this about Sodje back in .....September/ October. Shame he went to Brentford after Coppell left otherwise it would be a sure thing!

As it is now he has the option to play for the best team in the league!

If we were still in the fizzy pop league then this would be a good signing but I'm not convinced the Premiership isn't a step to far for the lad.

I'd much rather see a Callum Davenport or a Tom Huddlestone come here.

You're right, a ridiculous suggestion.

I mean, it's not like both players are proved at Championship level so if we go straight back down they wouldn't be good enough to help force a promotion charge.

Where as of course, the untried and untested Sam Sodje is experianced at League 1 level and, erm, oh!?!?

The last time Sam's name was mentioned in this forum I think that I said that he was not as good for us as either Ivar or Sonks - and that was before his dip in form at the end of the season. Still, if you premiership high flyers want to flash the cash then please feel free! :D
