Absolutely blown away

by Onestuartbeavon » 07 Dec 2006 21:32

As an exile, based in Scotland, the land decent football forgot, last night was my first game of the season. The atmosphere, the team, the football was unbelievable. How lucky are you? I was a glory hunter in 1979, watched during the dire 80'sand the promising 90's. But last night was beyond anything I expected. Fantastic, even in defeat I was proud.

We are having a great inaugural season in the top flight, it's true.

It's not a fluke, it is not anything experimental, and it's certainly nothing lucky.

It is purely the same team, doing the same stuff (fairly and squarely) as they did last season and are making a mockery of sooooooooooooo many premmierdonnaship "precious sultans" along the way.

As you say, proud................even in defeat

i went with my newcastle brother in law who has a newcastle season ticket, and i told him about the geordies singing "you only sing when your winning" at us when they went 3-2. he laughed so much as he sat behind the goal on the opposite side and heard us all through the match, the fans were a credit to reading fc tonight, URZ!

We were magnificent in Newcastle. Not just the fans but especially the team.

The attitude of both teams made for a great game. I thought the Geordie public were outstanding. They do have fantastic support. Certainly in terms of numbers if not in terms of noise levels. I thought our support was awesome on the night.

Our fans really lifted the Toon ultras to our left with our constant singing. We eventually woke them up.

The Geordies are great people, they have a great team. They really need to get rid of Roeder as soon as possible if they really want to achieve. Roeder is not a good boss at all and his comments generally are ridiculous. I know that Roeder and Redknapp don't get on but in the Geordie programme they described the 1-0 win against Pompey as a thrashing. I really don't think Roeder is in any position to criticise people like Redknapp or any other manager. Since Roeder has achieved nothing.

Our Fans in Newcastle on a Wednesday night was fantastic. Our team was brilliant! But credit where its due, so were Newcastle. I had a fooking brilliant time on the Toon on Wednesday night so I'm well chuffed. Great away venue with city centre stadia. Great bars if a little quiet on a Wednesday night, I can see the potential for a night on the Toon on a Saturday. I hope the fixture computer is kinder to us next season. I really want to get out on the Toon on a Saturday night next time.

Unfortunately I doubt we will be as competitive next time we play the Toon army. Unfortunately the up coming January and Summer transfer windows will rob us of Sidwell, Doyle, possibly Shorey and Sonko as well. We will of course have an additional 10 to 20 million in the bank as a result of those sales but next season could be a real relegation dog fight for us. So lets enjoy the current season while we can. It won't be the same next year!

Why would any of those players be leaving? Sidwell isn't leaving in January cos Mr Mad isn't going to let him. Sonko has yet to win over every pundit and journo in the country after a couple of penalties so far this season, Doyle has a long contract with us and is settled. Shorey is also contracted and no-one has expressed an interest in signing him.

Yeah, someone could come in with stupid money but I doubt that would be the case in January or June. Besides, Only Man Utd and Chelsea are better than us so the only way out is down

With new foreign investments there seems to be alot of clubs awash with cash right now who could be possible destinations for those players. Aston Villa, Pompey, West Ham, Man City could get new investment shortly, Boro have cash, Everton have the dosh.

Its gonna be hard to hold onto Doyle if one of the above offers 10 million for him. Sidwell is highly likely to leave. It would take about 5 million to relieve us of the services of Shorey and Sonko so those deals are less likely.

I can certainly see someone coming in for the Premierships top scorer Doyle with about an 8 to 10 million offer. I think there is a strong chance of that happening. And Sid won't cost anyone any money so we are going head to head with clubs like Boro, City, Villa, Irons, Evertonians to afford his wages. That is a battle we will lose!

Sonko and Shorey would require a hefty transfer fee which probably right now no one would be prepared to put in just yet but anything is possible in football.

If someone comes in with an offer of £10m i will have no complaints if the club accept it. But I doubt that will happen.

I think 10 million is what Doyle is worth right now. Long-term Doyle could even be worth up to £15 to £20 million at the height of his career with a bigger club!

I think there is alot of money at some medium to large clubs right now and there is an incredibly high chance that one of these will make an offer.

Villa is an obvious destination I think for both Doyle and Sidwell. I think both will end up there. But its just a guess and hopefully both will stay with us. But Villa certainly have the money to do the business.

I will be very surprised if someone is willing to gamble around £10m on a striker who has only played half a season in the top flight. The fact remains that we do not need to sell and therefore unless an offer comes in that is too good to refuse we will reject it.

For £10m clubs like Villa will want a striker with an excellent goal scoring record at a top level that is over a longer period than 20 matches.

Blown away. Is this because the windmills started flying 3 times after Newcastle scored?

Well people doubted Nugent was worth £5M but it seems someone might offer that - in which case double for Doyle is a bargain!

Doyle WON'T go in January. It would take a couple of seasons of consistency before a BIG club come in for him. It is widely acknowledged that the second season is harder as defences and managers wise up to a striker's movement.

Why would Doyle want to go to Villa/Everton/Wet Sham/Man City etc when he is achieving everything he wants right here? Both in the Prem and with the Ireland squad.

He has made it clear that he is thankful to Reading for giving him a chance. So he should remain loyal for at least this season.

Precisely, in Lloyds in the Gate I am thinking at around 12.30 - I'm OK, nice leisurely breakfast in the hotel in the morning but most of the rest of the packed pub have got to get and and go to work. Fair play to them.

Would still like to do a weekend up there though.

Really?

Maybe I went to all the wrong bars. B*ll*cks. I could have had an even better night out then! Damn...... So where did you go?

I went to Buffalo Joes, Jimmy Neills, Sea Bar on the quayside....... I also went to the Attic which had three floors. All floors empty apart from a few people on the top...... This was getting on for 2 am though. And I went to another small bar that I didn't know the name of!

Where did you go that was jam packed?
