Coppell and Optimism

by Fife » 18 Mar 2007 20:21

As much as I like Coppell and think he is a good manager I think he could be a little more optimistic. I can't bear to think what he'd be like if we were in a relegation fight. Every interview he says no way Europe - effectively saying the team is too sh1t to cope, which is a bit harsh on the players and himself who have got to that position. He's a great manager but his ambition for Reading just seems to extend to the next game.

However maybe in his mind he considers Europe and just doesn't want the players to get carried away. I'm sure this point will get battered but it's my opinion - it's not like it's Oliver Holt's.

I think he's more 'Effectively saying' we're not looking too far ahead.

I've never heard him say the olayers aren't good enough for European football. What I have heard him say is that the squad isn't deep enough to cope with the demands of the premiership plus European football and the travel and other pressures that entails

Think about it from the player's point of view. There would be a lot of pressure on them if SC came out saying they would qualify/win/score/etc.

Anyway, I have a sneaking suspicion that he's completely different when it's just him and the players, lots of encouragement. He can get very animated in the dressing room apparently.

Oh yeah, and he is GOD, so don't criticise him.

What can Reading actually WIN using Steve's famous radar?

The Prem's out of the question, his attitude to the Cups is pretty casual, he seems to want to avoid Europe like the plague so the Intertoto's out -and the Berks and Bucks too.

That leaves the Fair Play League and the Reserves and Academy teams.

Still, we are the Football League Champions and must say this as often as possible while we can.

Or maybe just trying to protect the team from added pressure the media creates?

Coppell has openly admitted speaking to George Burley earlier in the week, with them both agreeing that Europe is too much too soon for Reading.

I for one agree with them both.

Blimey.... if Europe is too much too soon for us right now (and I don't disagree), it just puts into perspective what top flight football would have done to us had we achieved it THAT day in Wembley!

I shudder to think.

Things always work out for the best. Thanks for not scoring Archie!

The reporters keep asking the same questions over and over again. I tend to focus on this message that SC keeps repeating:

'All we are about is winning the next game.'

'The only way we exist is by trying to win the next game. That is our mentality.'

'Europe is really not on our radar at the moment at all.'

That's a great message for the players. Stay focused, don't try to figure out who we need to beat and who we need to draw with in order to qualify. Leave that to the supporters on HNA. :-) Just focus on the next game. Win the next game (no matter who it is against).

Exactly. Win the next game and all the ones after that and we probably get to Europe. It's not rocket science.
