Doyle up for PFA young player of the year

by Motown » 16 Apr 2007 12:33

Drogba and Ronaldo head PFA list
Chelsea's Didier Drogba and Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo head the Professional Footballers' Association player of the year award nominations.
United also have Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes as contenders, with Liverpool's Steven Gerrard and Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas in the frame.

Rooney, Ronaldo and Fabregas are also up for a young player of the year gong.

Tottenham's Aaron Lennon, Kevin Doyle of Reading and Manchester City's Micah Richards join them on the list.

He doesn't stand a sniff. I'm even surprised he has been nominated

So Mr H&P why lock the first topic on this subject on here? Wasn't it to your liking?

Have to agree. Whilst it must be an honour for him to be nominated, he is arguably bottom of that list. Hmmm, maybe not quite bottom, I think Richards is a little overated personally.

How old is Matty Taylor? Does he still qualify as 'young'

I was being sarcastic. Hence the "wasn't it to your liking" comment.

As for Doyle - he is the weakest of the 6 contenders, but that is not a detriment to him as he has still been recognised as one of the best 6 young players in the Premiership. And that is a massive achievement.

IIRC, the voting is done back in December / January time so I imagine this is why he's made the shortlist.

Ronaldo looks nailed on to win it but I don't see why Doyle couldn't finish second or third.

I can give you three reasons:

Rooney, Fabregas and Lennon

You say he is the weakest and to be honest he maybe, but he is playing for a newly promoted side, and you look at the players hes up against you realise what a talent we have on our books. Fair play to Doyle he had been outstanding until his injury and im pleased hes been recognised

Doyle is 23 now. How old is a player before he is no longer considered "young"

To be nominated is an achievement.

Well done Doyle - fantastic achievement to be on the shortlist.

I think the voting is done in February actually - to correct one of the earlier posts.

I think it's also great because it shows how highly rated Doyle is amongst his fellow professionals and the PFA...

Shows how much he's come on this season - people were saying he was the least likely of our strikers to make it to Premiership standard, and, for me, he's been our best striker this season.

More of a team player than Lita or Kits - in fact he's played more like an attacking midfielder recently.

Fabregas, Rooney and Ronaldho have no business being nominated for the Young Player award.

It should be for players under 22 and in their first full season in the Prem.

It's about new talent, not players who have 3 or 4 years experience and a bucket load of caps.

No, it should be for young players (ie under a certain age when the season starts) regardless of how many appearances they have made in the Premiership before.

Oh, hang on, that is the criteria already.

Both Lennon and Richards have also made a significant number of Premiership appearances before this season, and Doyle was not under 22 when the season started.

If they had an award for best newcomer to the Premiership, Doyle would win it hands down..... ;)
