Your best and worst years?

by Dirk Gently » 16 May 2007 14:48

Now the season's over, which season have you enjoyed most - and which have you least enjoyed?

Best : For me, it's still the Championship winning season. Despite the achievements of this season, nothing could quite match that - partly because it was so unexpected, partly for the style and quality of the play, partly for the drama and emotion of the QPR game. Plus all the obstacles to being a fan that you get in the Prem (tickets prices, kick-off times, scarcity of tickets) plus the hype, diving, egos, etc mean that 05/06 still wins for enjoyment.

Worst : 98/99 - Brand new stadium, but on the pitch absolutely hopeless and passionless, playing sideways football under TB2. And spending half a million on Sean Evers! We just never looked like doing anything, and the half empty ground seemed to accentuate the sense of despair.

Best - definitely last season, winning the Championship streets ahead of everybody was like a dream, except that it was real. It was good to be a Reading fan at that time.

Worst - most probably 1988/89 or 1989/90, when we were back in the third division and Ian Branfoot was still the manager. It was a depressing time, we had no real prospects of going anywhere except probably years of relegation struggles and financial worries. The football wasn't that good either

Best: 2005/06 - just the most amazing season, billions of records set, Reading were the team to beat, and only two managed it. Not many fans get to watch their team sit head and shoulders above everyone for a whole season.
Worst: 1997/98 - relegated to League One for our first season at the Madejski Stadium, losing 14 of our last 16 games and finishing bottom.

Best: last year for obvious reasons, and 97-98 where we got relegated and played last game at elm park, just for the atmosphere, some of the results we got, the players etc
it was when i fell in love with RFC

worst, 98-98 playing in soulless half empty bowl, still hankering for elm park

The final game at Elm Park, momentous occasion though it was, was wholly underwhelming in the end. A poor performance, a defeat, and fans ripping the pitch up before the team could complete a lap of 'honour'.

well i liked it

having said that maybe liked is the wrong word, clearly it was awful for both me and the club
but as for strongest football memory its right at the top.
and made me the reading fan i am today

An absolute disgrace that day and easily the lowest moment for me as well. The arse-end of Branfoot's era was pretty depressing as well.

Like others my high would be last years Championship winning one but i would also mention the first promotion season i can fully remember which was the 4th Division champions of 78/79.

Best - 2005 - 2006.Awesome season which will never be beaten.

Worst - Any of our relegation seasons since I've been going, the actual moment you know you're going down hurts so much!

Best: For me it was the 94/95 season despite the way it ended. That season was simply surreal from the moment we stepped out at Molineux and watched Darius stroke the ball around the pitch like Bobby Moore in his pomp, to the play-off game at Tranmere when it really was like watching Brazil. I was lucky enough to only miss a handful of games home or away that season something I haven't been able to claim in recent seasons (My trip to Blackburn on Sunday was my first away-day in over five years). As wonderful as the the Championship winning season undoubtedly was I missed a fair proportion of even the games at the Madejski (offspring number two arrived as we were thumping Ipswich that Sunday in October) and so I never felt quite as involved with things the way I did ten years or so earlier.

Hindsight might yet make this season the best but at the moment it still doesn't feel quite real what we've experienced this year.

Worst: The 1997/98 season probably. The hope from three years earlier finally evaporated when relegation was confirmed and we said goodbye to Elm Park. And to make matters worse I thought Tommy Burns would prove to be our saviour.

Best 2005/06

Worst 1990/91. My first year as a STH and very nearly my last if it wasn't for JM.

Tight one this, but I really loved 93/94 & 94/95 and the stuff we played under McGhee and Quinn/Gooding. Also the 69/70 side which made such a huge impression on me as a kid. 2005/06 and 06/07 still just seems a bit unreal! Perhaps in years to come it will really begin to sink in.

The worst? Probably 82/83 and relegation. A truly shocking team that only had Kerry Dixon as a saving grace.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the championship winning season!
Just amazing going to each home game almost knowing we'd win, and some great days out too.

Worst? Has to be getting relegated from the first division in 98. Hurt like hell, and having Oxford United run all over us at the Manor made it that bit harder to take.

Best season has been this year by a clear mile. Tipped as relegation certainties, we made the transition with ease and have done it spending money within our resources. We've played good attacking football and have been a welcome addition to the Premiership.

But did you enjoy it as much as the season before?

2005/06 was the greatest ever season; just turning up to matches and KNOWING we were going to not lose, and as soon as we scored, wondering how many more we were going to get, the 106 points, the 5-0 v Derby, the 3-0 away at Ipswich, Leicester.........fantastic fantastic fantastic!!!

Also, we are never going to be promoted to the premiership for the first time again, so last season is going to be unique.

The worse for me, as with so many, was that last season at Elm Park; just the spineless, gutless performances that saw us humiliated at Oxford, Sunderland and so many other places, all to conclude with that totally inept performance in the last ever game at Elm Park against Norwich.......ok, we were down, but we all wanted something special in that last game, and all we got were players going through the motions.

Best 2005/06 - felt invincible - but closely followed by 93/94.

Worst - tough one - not 97/98 because there were some good games.

Maybe 98/99, maybe 89/90 which was pants after the first game, maybe 77/78 or 90/91 when nothing happened. So much choice - argh. 68/69?

I am with you Dirk - spot on.

Also add - the full season we had under Mark Mcgee - times at Elm Park we just looked fantastic - remember watching a game against Southend and it was bordering on embarrassing how we took them apart. Those times never really returned until last season.

The last 2 seasons stand out for obvious reasons, but 2002/03 must be up there. No one had heard of us yet we were top 6 for the last half of the season and really came to be noticed for the first time.

82/83 was very poor, but 88/9 takes the biscuit, only saved from a 2nd succesive relegation by beating Southend on the last day.
