The Colonel Not really a paper, but:

Only sentiment can spare Shorey a proper critique. As a Reading player, he was competent. Judged as an England player, or at least on the basis of what it is reasonable to expect from an England player, Shorey was mediocre. Although he was not exposed in defence, his limitations were painfully apparent whenever he ventured into support of Joe Cole.
Rating: 6.
Mediocre???
"As a Reading player, he was competant" - Has he left the club?
Idiots! Ok he didn't get forward much but we were playing Brazil. It was better than having Cashley Cole in there bombing forward like a headless chicken and leaving us exposed at the back for Ronaldihno to roam free.

strap [ I made a point of watching Cole and Shorey through the whole game. Cole actually passed to Shorey ONCE in the whole 90 mins!

I can't tell if it came across on TV, but there were numerous occasions in the second half where Shorey did his bit for a good overlapping run, but where for Reading the ball would be laid back to him to cross in, it never came back to him from Cole. He either go on a run himself, invariably until he lost the ball, or he'd play inside, where we were having no joy. The only time England looked remotely dangerous was when we got it wide, but we hadly ever tried to do so.Behindustrap [ I made a point of watching Cole and Shorey through the whole game. That might be a nice stat in theory but Cole passed to Shorey a lot more than that. OK they were mainly 5 yard lay offs but it was way more than one ! We are talking Joe Cole here aren't we ?
