RFC claims to fame

by floyd__streete » 23 Oct 2007 13:41

What are your RFC claims to fame? I'll kick off:

- I am on the 93/94 season video away at Leyton Orient looking grim faced in matching woolly hats with my brother (HNA's own Stuffed Crust Pizza) as Jimmy Quinn glances in an own goal equaliser.

- Also the 01/02 season video, stuttering in front of the camera  going on about the reasons why we were top of the league (at the time).

- Front page of the EP on the pitch the Monday after Reading 0-3 Port Vale/Bullivant Out.

- I have also been punched by Barry Hunter.

Our family can also claim:

- My Uncle in David Downs pictorial history of RFC, invading the pitch in 1976 when we were promoted. He is wearing flares, murked :D

- My Grandad immortalised on a Bobby Cahrlton jigsaw puzzle, as England's record goalscorer runs out for the 1970 Watney Cup match. Grandad in the background in his shades looking somewhat Carlos the Jackal-esque.

A couple of mates and I bought the first ever tickets sold in the north stand of the Madejski.

We were also the last people to ever stand in a small section at the back of the town end at elm park, which was always fenced off after that (stood there for the FA Sunday Cup Final, just to see what Elm Park looked like from the away end.)

- In last season's DVD of the year - I'm in the background, hovering anxiously

- my ex-wife was match mascot at the home derby with Aldershot, Easter 1983

- I was "Fan of the 70s" when they officially opened the MadStad - before the Newcastle friendly.

Good thread.

1) I was the RFC mascot at Villa Park, when they thumped us 4-1 in the League Cup. I scored a cracker against Gary Westwood in the warm up.

2) I've been Fans Verdict 3 times (all pre-Mad Stad) and we never lost.

3) My Dad sponsored the Coronets Club (run by Gary and Linda) at Elm Park for the kids. Me and my bro got free seats for a couple of seasons.

4) Being in the Coronets Club meant Xmas party's with the players. I have played 5-a-side with Gilkes, Horrix, Senior & co.

4) Both my Brothers have also been mascot. One of them was the mascot when we played Wolves in the record breaking attempt (85/86). We drew 2-2.

5) Been on a private tour of the Mad Stad, courtesy of an 'insider'

That'll do for now. 8)

I've done FV twice, once with Clive Baskerville and once with Ive. Both nice chaps to be fair.

I have also forgotten that Uncle Flares as mentioned above is good mates with Stuart Beavon as they live near each other in Coley....I mean Fords Farm  . He likes to bore us to death reminding us of this about 60 times a season (only joking Unc, I know you read this sometimes!). Stuffed Crust Pizza works with Dean Horrix's son.

I'm behind the goal in our 6-4 at Exeter back in 1993

Tommy Burns shook my hand at the very first Fan's forum on the south Bank, he said something scottish as well and I just nodded

Also, not directly Reading FC, but I was in Superstars back in 1977, seen in the back while David Coleman was interviewing Kevin keegan about his cycling proficiency

Also seen invading the pitch for the 0-3 v Port Vale

And asked Mick Gooding who scored in 1-1 at Stockport in 1994, he said something in northern about not being too sure himself!

Unfortunately bugger all telly of Reading exists before about 1993 so there may well be lots of other crowd sightings to be had....

Oh yes- I've done FV once - quite recently, and also did the Chronic's "Fans' Panel" for all of the 98/99 season.

I'm the one wearing the cap and blue coat.
Was also on the 2000/2001 and 2002/2003 season videos and got my picture in the EP when marcus gave me his shirt at Leeds.

Scored two penalties in a shoot-out at St Andrews at half time of our 1-0 win there that kept Brum out of the play-offs, Brum fans spilt on the pitch 2nd half in an attempt to get the game called off.

Michael Gilkes used to live a 2 min walk from me in Lower Earley, and one day(must have been about 14ish) I was on my bike just about to go into the park next to his house and he shouted out of the window to me "I've left my keys in the door, and I can't open it from the inside. Could you turn the keys for me and open the door?". I didn't realise it was him until he and Keith MacPherson came out of the door! So in amazement I said "Your Keith MacPherson!" and he just smiled at me! That's all i've got!
