player ratings v sunderland

by winchester_royal » 22 Dec 2007 19:02

USA-8 quality saves.........needs to work on his penalty stopping
Murts-7 Solid, commited......typical captains performance
Sonks-6 Stupid tackle to give away penalty, and seems to have lost a yard of pace since injury
Ingi-8 Rock solid at back, and a superb tap in
Shorey-6 Distinctly average, not an england international
Hunt-9 Brilliant performance, pacey, and he has really improved his crossing
Gunnar-7 good first half, but was anomynous in second
Harps-6 Did not see him do one good or bad thing all game
Convey-8 worked hard, and tackled well, lacked quality of hunt though
Doyle-5 Useless, time for long to come in
Kits-8 sme stunning cross field balls............oozes class

Long-8 injected pace and purpose into a tiring and idealess side

Coppell-6 should have made more changes sooner, needs to learn to act rather than react........should have brought long on sooner, and also should have brought cisse on as we were losing battle in centre of midfield towards the end

Harper took the free kick that led to our first goal. Bump him up to a 7 just for that please. 8)

Bit harsh dropping Doyle though, keep Long on a lead until the 75th minute then let him on the pitch.

Whilst it was a good all-round performance by Hunt, I have not seen any great improvement in his crossing. I can remember two occaisions when he crossed the ball to the far post and there was no Reading player anywhere near. I wish he would look up on occasions beofre he crosses.

Also amazing is that some of these opinions are based on Ceefax and the Radio.

Precisely why I shan't be making any. Didn't see the game, though if I'd have listened on the radio I might have made an offer.

Disagree with several of those - Marcus deserves more like a 9 - can't fault him for not saving the penalty and made some crucial saves that kept us at 1:1.

Doyle - probably agree with rating but not with comment; turned his marker several times in first half, just his finishing was poor. Worked very, very hard though to compensate.

Convey was rather weak IMHO - nowhere near Hunt, especially in second half. Agree that substitution should have come earlier. But Coppell is God and so should always get a 10 in my book.

thought everyone done pretty well today - with one exception, Convey, quite what he contributes game after game is baffling. As soon as Long comes on we and actually CROSSES the ball we score - coincidence ?

I may be a indulgent giving Convey 8, I admit I'm well disposed towards him. I think it's pretty fait though, his workrate and positioning were good, he's tracking back effectively. I don't underetimate how much the improvement in Reading's ability to create in the last third is affected by his return.

But obviously, Hunt gets 9. I've always appreciated his work rate and enthusiasm but doubted his technique. There were plenty of wonderful examples of technique. I know his crossing isn't the best (whereas Harper played some excellent balls into the box), but that's not the be-all and end-all of his role.

May I suggest you look back to how we were playing before COnvey came back. Like Muppets. Hunt was near useless and we were getting battered all over the place.

Now we have a little balance and two wingers and we've picked up 8 pts from the last 4 games. Coincidence? I think not. COnvey may not be playing at the top of his game, but his presence means that teams can't just ignore one of our flanks because it won't provide any danger.

Spot on. I'm amazed at the negative comments about Doyle - he's such a worker, and despite unfortunately drifting into another barren spell when it comes to finishing, his head never goes down. The Sunderland no.6 looked almost physically sick with worry every time he had to deal with matters in the first half, and that was largely down to Doyle's pressurising. He's mislaid his shooting boots once again, but his all-round approach play is still good, in my opinion.

I love this topic because it gives people the chance to over-rate and under-rate in line with their favourites.
I think our front two deserve at least 8 every week-their commitment is faultless and in Kitson we have our one top class player.
How Hunt can get 9 and Doyle 5 from one poster I find incredible-Doyle works just as hard if not harder than Hunt and as one earlier poster said,Hunt's crossing was abysmal.
Also Convey getting an 8 from somebody-were you there?

IMHO Marcus deserves at least an 8 and Sonko about a 4-he looked weak taking on a physical player like Jones and yet another reckless challenge in the box that almost cost us the game.
In my mind he has not been the player that he was but hopefully a spell away in Africa will help get him back to speed.

As for selection,Coppell really cannot have any faith in Cisse or Fae to play Gunnar with an 8" inch gash in his leg which surely cannot have healed properly within the space of 7 days and the poor devil had to play the full 90 minutes.
