Back from the game......and really angry!

by Gordons Cumming » 01 Jan 2008 17:41

I have not been so angry at a game for a long time.

Why or why was Sonko sent off for that challenge? Don't give me any of the "last man" nonsense either!!!

The referee was a complete joke as was is partners in crime. Mr & Mrs Lino.

Didn't the referee know it was New Years Day?

I hate referees...................

I haven't seen it Gordon. Was the pen a fair decision?

Penalty was fair. Red card possibly harsh but not too many complaints I guess. But someof the other decisions made throughout the game by the ref and the linesman on the East stand side were absolutley shocking.

Sonko didn't give the ref any option. Honestly, what else could Dean have done?

He was hardly clear on goal!! The penalty was punishment enough.
This last man rule has been abused by referees for years. That rule was meant for an entirely different offense.

Also the free kick against Harper that led to the goal was another example of players conning referees and they not being smart enough to spot it.

There is no last man rule, the sending off was for denying a goalscoring opportunity. If he got the man before the ball then he should have gone.

What a stupid rule!!!!

Why should the team be punished twice then?????..........and the home fans for that matter..........and the game as a spectacle?

Idiots.

that was the worst excuse for officiating a game i have ever seen as some people on here have said the pen and sending off was all that he got right!

The rule is you must deny the player a CLEAR goalscoring opportunity. This should be interpreted as meaning on a balance of probabilities the attacker can be expected to score (51 percent of the time).

Today all that was denied was a "goalscoring opportunity". The red card was harsh but increasingly this is the way the rule has been applied. The Villa red card v Chelsea is another classic example of this situation. Harsh, but Sonko has only got himself to blame.

There is no last man rule. It's fiction, the rule is clear goalscoring opportunity. Nothing to do with the number of players between the ball and the goal.

I thought the rule was that if he was the last man left between the opponent and the goal. If what you say is correct how come Sonko didn't get sent off against Spurs when conceding the penalty because that could also have been considered a goal scoring opportunity.

Because he didn't have a good game at Spurs on Saturday.

The rule should apply outside the box, not in it.(Meaning the penalty was punishment enough)

IMHO

The ref is still an idiot!

Then how come Benjani got a scuffed shot off as he was brought down then? As someone else said, the penalty and sending off where the only two decisions Dean got right all afternoon. He was shocking but the blame for our defeat lies squarely on the shoulders of our lumbering centre back.

The referee is an irrelevance today in many ways. For as long as Reading keep making individual errors we will keep conceding goals and losing football matches.
