DLC v Shorey

by bcubed » 15 Apr 2008 14:49

OK, I know it will never happen, but why not play DLC at left back?
Supposing it was possible, I wondered how they stacked up, stats wise?

Height
DLC 5 9
Shorey 5 9
Weight
DLC 10 8
Shorey 11 9
Speed
DLC slow
Shorey slow
Crossing
DLC Pretty good
Shorey Generally good and consistently has most assists, but not much to show on this score lately
Passing ability
DLC Very good. Likes to play a One-Two and often is thinking ahead of his team mates
Shorey Normally good, but based on last few games, poor
(Based on Fulham game, cannot even recognise his own players)
International experience
DLC Played in World Cup
Shorey 2 caps
Form
DLC Nothing to go by of late, but when last seen looked in good nick
Shorey Woeful
Goal scoring ability
DLC Not much to write home about here, but who can forget that classic against the Blades?
Shorey Free kick specialist
Consistency
DLC Always played well for the Royals when I have seen him
Shorey Normally (e.g. last season) one of the most reliable players
Flair
DLC Likely to do the unexpected
Shorey Hmmm, steady is probably the best word
Reading the game
DLC Excellent, makes incisive runs and timely interceptions are a speciality
Shorey Average, sticks to what he knows best
Positional play
DLC Occasionally goes missing (bit of a problem for a defender!)
Shorey Usually good
Age
DLC 34
Shorey 27
Star sign
DLC Aquarius
Just because others have a different agenda doesn't mean you can't work together.
Shorey Pisces
Been given a huge assignment? Go for it, today. You can figure out the details as you go along, but you definitely don't want to miss this one.

Della wins it for me 8)

Are you suggesting he should have included a category of "footedness" in his profile?

coz i am not sure if that word even exists

Fatter, now that I had a kebab for lunch.

Of course, the preferred foot of the player makes a difference.

Johan Cruyff wouldn't agree with you over a requirement to be left footed on the left!

As much as a don't like the depth of criticism on here to any of our players, Nicky is another that could do with a break and some freshening up. I like the proposal, hope it floats.

But it won't.

Fine, play a right back at left back and watch him fly.

Or. Not.

I think at this stage of the season it would be totally suicidal to remove our consistant left back who usually plays well (apart from recently), is our top of assists and takes most free kicks for a player who has played once at left back for us.

I am by no means slagging of de la as he has been excellent most times i have seen him play but he is not a left back. Shorey has been playing below his very hight standards recently but genrally it is his passing and attacking which has been poor not genrally his defending which for a defender is ok.

We can't do without Shorey because of his ability going forward. DLC can cross the ball alrigth from his normal position as a right back, but from the left it just becomes about as consistent and threatening as Hunts.

bcubed Passing ability
DLC Very good. Likes to play a One-Two and often is thinking ahead of his team mates
Shorey Normally good, but based on last few games, poor

Unfortunately Shorey is technically one of, if not the best player in our squad. His left foot is fantastic and even when he's off form and a bit disinterested as he has been this season, it's vital to the attacking balance of the team that he's in the side.

bcubed Goal scoring ability
DLC Not much to write home about here, but who can forget that classic against the Blades?
Shorey Free kick specialist

When we're so dire at creating chances dropping our most creative player (bar a certain Mr Little) would be daft.

bcubed Flair
DLC Likely to do the unexpected
Shorey Hmmm, steady is probably the best word

Problem is DLC is as likely to do something unexpected at the wrong end of the pitch. I'm not sure what you mean by flair, but taking it to mean doing something a little bit different to create an opening for the side, then Shorey is way ahead of DLC.

DLC has been a great squad player for us over these last two seasons. He's come in and far surpassed my expectations of him, and despite a few bad games he's been a reliable deputy. His defending was suspect at previous clubs but I think as his pace and attacking threat has diminished he's learnt to be a more resolute defender. This season he's looked pretty solid when he's come in and done a job. Usually thats been in his favoured right back slot, but he has at times covered for Shorey reasonably well. However we can't drop Shorey at the moment because we need his left foot in the side as it's our most potent attacking weapon and we need the ability to score or create a goal so DLC replacing Shorey in the side is a no no for me.

However, with Hunt seemingly regressing to the Championship bit-part player he was a couple of years ago and his inability to get quality into the box from the left I could see an argument for moving Shorey forward onto the left wing and bringing DLC in at left back. That might make us a bit more solid defensively without losing Shorey's attacking threat.

Considering we're up against a fliud Arsenal who's midfield have run rings round us every time we're played them it's quite likely we'll line up with a 5 man midfield. Hunt has been used in the middle before (to stop Campo against Bolton previously (although they actually played Speed instead I think) as one good example) and so I could see that being a good option again.

Its funny I was actually thinking about this earlier. It did strike me as a possibility, but I couldn't imagine Coppell dropping Shorey to play someone out of position who's only ever played there once for us (as good as he was against Sheff Utd last year).
