Fascinating - Pick your favourite stat from this lot

http://www.neilbrown.newcastlefans.com/ ... eading.htm

For me seeing that Steve Francis who I remember being at Reading forever then going on to have a massively long career with Huddersfield is one.

Ollie Kearns was a bit of a goal machine.

Ronnie Blackman's goals/game ratio.

We had Martyn Booty for 4 years.

Grant Brebner got 1 in 4 from midfield and left for peanuts.

Mike Conroy only scoring 7 in 80 games - I think I remember him getting 2 in one of those!

Porterfield playing for us in the 70's.

I was there when some of these things were happening but my memories are hazy and seeing the stats now it's not how I remember things happening at all!!!!!

Fascinating. Craig Maskell had a strike rate of 1 in 3?

And I seem to recall Steve Blatherwick playing far more than 7 games. Thought he was excellent.

Maskell was quality. Good feet in the box, them was the days when teletext and 15 minute updates on Radio 210 was the extent of the coverage available!

Endlessly watching the pages flick over on ITV page 143. (Think it was that anyway).

Isn't it strange how some players you remember well only played a relatively small number of games.
To me the following seemed to play a lot more games
Jason Bowen 15
Keith Curle 40
Colin Gordon 24
Uwe Hartenburger 24
Terry Hurlock 29
Tommy Jenkins 21
Andy Legg 12
Bobby Mikhailov 24
Simon Osborn 32
Billy Whitehurst 17

Then you have a player like Jerry Williams with 309!

The mind does play funny tricks

Same.

He was instrumental in the 2-1 victory over Wolves at EP I seem to recall.. superb flick on for Archie's 2nd.

Grant Brebner, he was a great player who did indeed leave for peanuts.

Was at the Melbourne Victory v Gamba Osaka - AFC Champions League game a couple of weeks ago and looked through all the players at the merchandise store, and there he was, low and behold was Mr.Brebner in a Victory shirt, so picked up a badge with him on it...unfortunately he wasn't in the squad for the game.

4-3 to Osaka btw...shocking standard of play

You've missed the word "sometimes" out of that sentence. Taking The Biscuit summed him up with their cut out and keep Maskell songsheet

Super, super Craig
Super, super Craig
Super, super Craig
Super Craigie Maskell

or

Sack, sack, Craig Maskell
Sack, sack, Craig Maskell
Sack, sack, Craig Maskell
He's a lazy bastard

I thought our plan at 85 minutes was "send him up front" and he bullied Wolves around a bit.

Wasn't he merely here on loan?

LEE David CD 91-92 On loan from Chelsea 5 games 5 goals

Of all the players who promised something while at Reading, his failure to make the grade is still the most mysterious to me. The word imperious could have been invented for his sweeping.

TH was extremely unlucky that his reputation preceded him. I saw him get sent off at Wiogan when he had the temerity to remain standing when one of their players attacked him kung fu style, leaving the poor assailant on the floor. Referee was BT Stevens or Bart's Dad as he became known (Mr Homer).

Injuries did for him.

Whenever he played for Chelsea he looked good, but he couldn't stay fit.

I agree with your observation though, he was pure class for us and was so much better than anyone else on the pitch it was almost embarrassing. Jim Leighton was the next best loan signing I saw followed by Steve Morrow.

Couple of other comments - Blatherwick was indeed on loan, and Maskell was not quality!

From Forest.

Was a player who you could always spot on the Nationwide league highlights when at Chesterfield

I doubt it very much. 250k tops.

I always used to have a bee in my bonnet with Reading fans and "record signings". The moment we signed someone it seemed to be the cue for fans to expect Cruyff,Pele and Puskas all rolled into one. If they didn't score a hat trick in their first couple of games then they were instantly dubbed a failiure. I always thought Maskell was a decent enough player, didn't quite work out for him with us but there were much much worse before and after.
