Yo Yo team

by Focher » 12 May 2008 15:13

surely this is the best we could have ever hoped for?

Could we have become a regular top 10 team? No

Would we have consistently struggled to avoid relegation? Yes

For a club with the stature of Reading Fc for me being a Yo Yo team is the best we could ever hope for entertainment wise. Im sure some would disagree at the moment.

I genuinely believe that with a few astute signings from January 2006 onwards, we could have avoided relegation yesterday.

Another relegation will restore the status quo.

I agree with paps,

but we were never likely to be there for the long haul first time round. Next season is so crucial in the long term success and status of our club.

I think that's kind of what he's getting at.

We were never going to become an established force in the Premiership so what's better, consistently battling relegation or going down for a season or two of challenging at the top end of the league, maybe going up, maybe winning or losing in the play offs etc etc and then doing the whole thing again.

I can see the appeal in dropping down for a couple of years of being one of the better side again...but it's not going to be that simple is it!!!

I'd have loved for us to strengthen a little over the last 18 months and been comfortable in 12th place as I think we could've been this season. Repeat a couple of times, expand the stadium and push on for that European Tour we all sung about this time last year.

I agree. If we can do the same as the likes of West Brom and Sunderland, It should ensure that we maintain crowd levels and interest in the club, rather than potter along in the mind numbing world that is the bottom half of the premier league.

Personally this season has been by far and away the least bothered ive ever been about the demise or success of RFC, going back down to the championship i hope gives me the kick up the anus i need to get my passion back for the game.

Agree with that last sentiment. I gave up on us staying up in about January.

Something that goes up and back down is not a yo-yo, it is simply obeying the laws of the universe. We will need a few more promotions/relegations before we can really be considered to be a yo-yo club.

In all the years of supporting Reading, I've seen 4 promotions and 3 relegations. I view this relegation as being similar to our situation in 1988, rather than 1998. In the late 80's, at the time, we hadn't been in the old second division for something like 50 years and therefore we were really out of our depth and went down in the second season. Very much like our two Premier seasons. What happens next, I hope, will be to return to the Premiership, spend more than two seasons up there and gradually build ourselves into a bigger club. However, I do hope it won't take 6 seasons to get back up!

I think it's important to look at Bolton's example. They "yo-yoed" for a bit before getting very nicely established. Being an eternal optimist, the best way to look at relegation is to see it as a learning curve. The management should now know what is required to survive and next time (which I sincerely believe will be in the next 3 seasons) we can make the right moves.

Nice guys finish last. Or third from bottom.

Was it when the guy rang in to say Murty should stay as captain and he sounded too choked to answer?

I don't get the analogy with a yo-yo. Granted a yo-yo goes up and down (or rather down and up because the former would deny the laws of gravity) but with a yo-yo your objective is to make it keep on going down and up, isn't it?

your critique is slightly harsh but i must admit i had mixed emotions coming out of pride park yesterday.

its was a bit like being dumped by a nightmare bird and being able to go out on the pull again.

on the one hand we are free of the nightmare of the prem and can get back to the championship which is more fun yet on the other hand you have to live with the embarisment of being relegated and the p**s take we will get all year from the rest of the league.

i would rather turf moor on a wet wednesday in october than the sterile emirates on a date and time chosen by sky

there is no embarrassment in being relegated, the only teams to take the piss would have all spent the majority of the last three years not winning the championship, not finishing 8th in the prem, or being in the prem at all.
who cares what they say?!well have finished higher than everyone in the division with us
