Murty or Parky ?

by DrZoidberg » 13 May 2008 09:46

It seems to me these guys have had pretty similar careers . Not the most talented but loyal and very hardworking. Murty has achieved at a higher level so that probably swings it for me . The premiership generation have probably never even heard of Parky ... so I would expect Murty to win this by a mile.

Tough Call. Both to me gave/give their all for Reading FC. Parkinson gave us a rock in the middle of the park and Murty has been an inspirational leader. I think though Murty just shades it for me, his rappor with the fans and obvious affection for RFC is something you don't see with 99% of todays players. Both hold legendary status for me and both truely great servants to RFC

Murts, by a long, long, way.

He had the chance to become a Premier league Billy-Big-Bollocks and he's stayed exactly the same - a superb ambassador for the club.

Parky didn't really do that much for us above any other player - he just did it for a bit longer - and once he moved on he shafted Colchester in a very McGhee-esque way.

Not sure I agree with that Dirk.

Parky was an integral part of the squad for a long time. He was the heartbeat and driving force in the dressing room at a time when we were really struggling and, as skipper, did a lot of work for the team. He was also the PFA rep and all of that. He refused to squeezed out of the club and turned down moves away from the club to stay loyal and help fight our way our of the troubles of the Burns era.

He was never the player that Murty has been and struggled to get into the side when we were half decent, but for me that just adds to his legend status.

Murty on the other hand has been an exceptional player for us and was an integral part of our most successful team ever. Being the skipper, and it's natural leader too (alongside Sidwell for half the dressing room) by the looks of it gives him a massive lead in terms of playing status. Off the pitch he's been a model pro for that last 5 or 6 years and he's a nice a bloke as your going to get in modern football but I'm waiting for Vision to pitch in with his views on Murty's early contributions to RFC. I'm not really sure what Murts has done 'above any other player' more than than Parky ever did (bearing in mind we've been in the Prem with all the extra media etc etc)?

Both are legends in their own rights and I wouldn't like to rank either of them as more so than the other because they're times at Reading cover completely different times at the club.

Personally, I dont think Murty was ever good enough to be a consistent Premier League player - would any of the other Premiership clubs have signed him? Had he not been at Reading I dont think he would ever have played in the Premiership.

I am sick of hearing about this guy off the pitch - I appreciate he is Captain and he has done (IMHO) an ok job on the pitch but am I the only one who is sick of hearing from his wife, child and mother on BBRB off the pitch. Everytime I turn on the Radio, or read the Evening Post the Murty family are there giving it the big "I AM" which certainly wasnt the case whilst in the Championship to my recolection. I am just bored of hearing about the M-U-R-T-Y-S to be honest.

I was around to see Parky play which many "bandwagon" fans probably were not. In terms of ability not much between them both, but in terms of passion, desire and determination (and the ability to show it) means that Parky is/was in a different league to Murts. Parky lead the team out from the tunnel, would run to the opposite side of the pitch and get the crowd going - Murts......well....huddle anyone?

An unfair comparison if you ask me as some people voting Murty are probably thinking - Parky who?

I cannot choose. Both are Reading heroes for me (just add Curo, Gilkes & Hicks for my ultimate list).

Murty or Parky..... It's like asking a father which of his twins he loves most, he will tell you he loves them both equally even of that isn't so.

Nothing between them, but for me it's Parky. He was around during my formative football years.

Murts is a legend too though.

Whereas now he's just a management whore who thinks of nothing but his career?
A man who goes back on his word?
For me, it's no contest.
Parkinson isn't fit to lace Murts' boots.
