Ibrahima Sonko - fans' views needed

by Why_Delilah » 10 Sep 2008 11:25

Hi,

I'm a reporter from a newspaper in Stoke-on-Trent - The Sentinel - and I am putting a story together on Ibrahima Sonko.

As with most stories like this I like to hear what fans from the player's former club think of them.

I have a few questions I'd like answering. Anyone interested in taking part, can you e-mail me on dave.knapper@thesentinel.co.uk. We can do the mini-interview over e-mail, only a few questions.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,
Dave

Lightening quick winger...two good feet...perfected the art of bringing down strikers in the box...

Always put club before country  despite having ummmm only a few bench appearances for Senegal...

Came back a million times better after his knee op...great bit of business for you guys

According to a Reading newspaper, Sonko was nicknamed Superman because he could jump high.

Hint for The Sentinel - they got it wrong because they couldn't be bothered to do even minimal research.

His reading career went something like:

Monster -> Injury -> Liability

Might be a star player if/when he fully recovers from his cruciate ligament injury and stops getting red carded/conceding penalties. Just don't expect him to play for the reserves if there's an International match comming up as he doesn't want to miss his chance to sit on the bench for his country (which he decided was Senagal after realising the French were not interested).

On a more positive note, he was a part of the side that won the Championship with a record breaking 106 points.

Sonko got the nickname Superman after stopping a thundering shot with his chest.

Andre Bikey temporarilly had the nickname Spiderman after comming on as a replacement for Sonko when he picked up his injury.

The Reading FC Megastore has a selection of Soko is Superman keyrings which I'm sure they would be more than willing to ship to Stoke at a reduced price should the nickname live on.

Speed was a major strength of Sonko, it got him out of alot of problems whereas Ingimarsson travels at about walking place but uses his brain to be in the right place, this is something Sonko needs to work on as he isn't as fast as he was pre-injury, however he is still a good player and would have featured for us at Championship level for sure if he had stayed.

Don't be surprised if Sonko scores more goals per start than Dave Kitson.

Tredder has a great Sonko taxi annecdote I'm sure he would be willing to share.

Sonko can outstare anyone, rumour has it he spent 2 days trying to stare someone out before realising it was his own reflection.

Last season our back four was shocking, Sonko was the worst by a long way. Says it all really. Played terrible, lost his place, refused to play for the reserves. I think we were all surprised when you guys came in with a bid and we must have laughed all the way to the bank.

You guys would have been 100x better of going for Bikey or even taking Doobs back. Expect a lot of penalties, free kicks round the box and some terrible passing.

It's not being bitter, you've got a great player in Kits, but Sonko's not the same player since the injury. Got a big contract, fcuked some slag of Big Brother, was shown up by Premiership strikers, threw his toys out. Frankly Charlton's strikers made mince meat of him.

He's typical Pulis, big and quick, maybe he'll get the best out of Sonko, not sure his best is good enough though.

I didn't actually know where Superman had come from FL, but that's the best footballer nickname fact in the history of the game.

Sonko was one of my favourite players in the championship winning team & did seem to be a genuinely decent bloke. I always used to enjoy his massive hoofed clearances (ridiculed by opposition supporters at times) that would do a quick orbit of the earth & at his peak he was unbeatable in the air.
Then we got promoted & something went wrong.

Concentration is poor sometimes, plays a man onside by not being in line with other defenders to play the offside trap.

He was great in the Championship winning season and even played through a minor injury, turned down the chance to play for Senegal at the African Nations Cup. Then it all went wrong after his major injury at home to Sheffield United the following season.

I didn't like reading his comments on the move to Stoke, that he was very happy to get a move away if only to Stoke a side probably likely to go down.

awesome, dominant defender at championship level
worked incredibly hard for us, improved exponentially under coppell, and the lads
went from 50 p head to superman in a month
some of the stuff he did in our championship season wil stay with me forever

struggled a bit to come to terms with the prem at first, then gota horrific injury, and only started to look decent again in th elast few weeks

has a tendency to be a walking redcard/penalty at the top level, but i reckon once hes fully over the injury, he still has room for improvement

his attitude did seem to change in the prem, refusing to play for the reserves, and dating big brother tarts etc

wish the lad well, hope he can find his real form again for you guys

what doya think of kitson so far?

if on top form sonko can be brilliant, if he is just a smidgeon under that he is poor. Terrible positionally and now lacks pace to get him out of this predicament.

Superman nickname came from the Ipswich game in the 106 season. Hahnemann dropped the ball at Proudlocks feet, for him to hammer it home, only for Sonko to appear from nowhere to head the ball clear (followed by a few dramatic rolls on the floor). A gentle giant but a walking penalty if someone skins him in the box

Forbury Lion Sonko got the nickname Superman after stopping a thundering shot with his chest.

Wrong. It was stopped with his face after he 'flew' towards the ball. Against Ipswich, home, live on Sky.
