Catch Brum by Christmas

by Percy's Rocket » 26 Nov 2008 08:56

Right boys...three home games plus Barnsley away...lets get a run on there while Brum go to Wolves, Plymouth and somewhere else and then we can leave them behind in the new year (as long as no-one leaves). Phillips is bound to get crocked soon anyway. The blues have to be the target..Can't see Wolves losing momentum.

We're too up and down. I'll take top six and the nightmare of the play-offs.

Brum can be caught but not by xmas. You're mental.

If we keep the squad together, I think we could catch both Birmingham and Wolves in the long term.

Don't know why you're all being so pessimistic - neither of those teams is any better than us and we've already rinsed Wolves away.

6 points, 10 points, 12 points, whatever - it's not decisive so early in the season.

We'll be ahead of Birmingham by the end of January.......however 12 points is a big gap to Wolves........

Have faith though....the good lord will smile favourably on the Royals....he told me so in a vision last night......

We need to keep doing what we were doing earlier in the season. We know we're good enough, it's the consistency that we need to develop.

Stating the obvious I know, but I hate knowing that we're reliant on them to slip up more than once and us to keep winning.

All that matters is where we are at 5pm on the last day of the season, HTH

People seem to think that because Wolves and Birmingham are on great runs at the moment that they will just carry on in the same vein for the rest of the season. Forget about them. Relax. We are doing just fine.

So far this has been a brilliant season - new home-grown players coming through to our 1st team, and / or establishing themselves as professional footballers whilst out on loan, lots of goals to watch, hammering some of the best teams in the division, 3rd in the table... Add to that the fact that we are financially secure and the future looks pretty good to me.

Good luck to Wolves and Birmingham, if they can carry on their current form for the rest of the season I'm sure they will fully deserve promotion, but I suspect they will both have a big wobble or two before the end of the season and I believe we are probably good enough to take advantage of that to sneak up on the rails and pip them. Even if we don't it still looks like being a pretty successful transitional season.

Bring on the play-offs. There won't be a team in the league that can beat us over two legs and then we can sit back and relax as we set a record win at Wembley.

Course they can - it's only six points and we play them before Xmas and they go to Wolves at the weekend.

We're certainly inconsistent, but it's not quite as mental as you might think. If Brum lose to Wolves and we beat Coventry at the weekend, we only (ha!) have to match them point for point, then when we beat them on the 20th we'll be above them on goal difference.

The big issue is whether we can start playing well against the weaker teams. If we can, there's some low-hanging fruit to be picked between now and the visit of the fat bearded bloke in red.

This isn't as mad as it sounds. If you look at the fixture list 7 out of our 10 away games have been at top 13 sides including 4 out of the other 5 top 6 sides. We have also now played every side down to 15th bar Brum, but haven't played any of the sides currently 16th-19th.

I know it doesn't always work out that way, but in theory the games we have to come should be easier than what has been a pretty tough run of fixtures.

Not sure we will catch Brum by Christmas, but look at it this way - If we did the double over them and matched every other result they had there is a good chance we'd be promoted. I agree that Wolves are looking home and hosed already.

It certainly hasn’t up to now. On paper, the QPR-Burnley-Bristol C-Derby-Sheff U sequence was the toughest run of five games we’ll get this season. And we came out with a creditable 10 points (arguably should have been 12 or maybe even a full house). Then we go and lose at home to Southampton.

Obviously plenty of games to be won and lost between now and May, but right now it looks like the current top three will go up, be it automatically or via the playoffs. That could all change in January, but nobody else in the division looks capable of competing.

I am looking forward to seeing if the Wolves fans will be let down again though.

If only it were that simple. History proves that the team which comes third in a 3-horse race hardly ever goes up via the play-offs.
