Games you remember because they were so good.

by Victor Meldrew » 07 Jan 2009 16:25

Having looked at the other thread about the dire games how about these for starters.
Spurs 6 Reading 4
Reading 0 Arsenal 4
Tranmere 1 Reading 3
Blackpool 0 Reading 4
Bolton 4 Reading 3 (aet)
Reading 0 Man City 7
Reading 4 Luton 1 (Simod)
Exeter 4 Reading 6
Reading 8 Southport 0.

I put in the Arsenal and City games as examples where you just had to applaud the opposition as they were that much better as Blackpool fans did and Tranmere fans also did for us at those two games.

I still have very very fond memories of the 4-0 win at Blackpool in 1994....that cracking goal by Dylan Kerr that opened the scoring, his subsequent shirt over head celebration and a couple of Reading fans breaking past the barrier to celebrate. What a day.

WTF, I just noticed that VM put in the Reading 0 Arse 4. That is a bloody outrage, that was the worst ever game I've seen in recent years.

For those of us who don't hate Arsenal, and can appreciate talent, it wasn't half as bad as it would have been for small-minded xenophobes.

Reading 3-3 Forest - I almost got beaten up in the SU just for being a Reading fan, and my mate almost got beaten up for being a Forest fan and yet drinking with me.

I can agree about the Arsenal performance

You're missing

Reading 4 Plymouth 3 - The comeback
Most of the Championship season, notably Palace at home
and then more recently
Reading 3 Spurs 1
Reading 3 Liverpool 1

EDIT and I'm missing the other comeback, Reading 3 Boro 2

That's a laugh, "xenophobe", considering we have our own foreigners. I was not there to appreciate the "talent" of the opposition, I was there to watch Reading win and losing 4-0 was a disgrace.

Any game in which we beat Warnock in recent years... which would be most of them

Any game in which we beat Pardew in recent years...which would be most of them

Infact most games in the last 3 and half years have been good for one reason or another.

I don't care. We lost. That was bad enough for me.

LOL @ Spacey

Would like to add the Palace home game which was just a superb game of football 3-2 win

4-3 against Oxford, also the 3 wins over West Ham, in particular the 2-0 and 6-0 wins.

FTR I think VM is right including that Arsenal game. 1 down in about 30 seconds to a bit of genius and it was an all out massacre. Something that i can say is I saw Thierry Henry at his best play at Reading and he was supreme that evening, they all were to be fair to them.

2-0 Villa home.

Up 'n' at 'em two hours before daybreak on the coldest day of the winter, two buses to the pub for a 6:45 AM KO.

Since it was the day's early game, the bar was beginning to fill up with the Utd/Chelase/Toon/'Pool gloryseekers as Sidwell finished off his brace late on.

Also my 40th and the day that BHO announced his candidacy. Doesn't get any better, although 3-1 over Tottenham at home under similar circumstances comes close.

I did say my list was just for starters, that's why I asked for other people's memories.
Thanks for reminding me about the Forest 3-3 ,was that the Steve Stone miss and Martin Williams/Dave Bessant penalty?
Can I add
Reading 2 Man Utd 3 (Watney Cup)
Reading 2 Sheff Wed 3 (FA Cup in the days when teams put out their best eleven)
Leeds 2 Reading 3 (All the better for our unlucky defeat there 2 years earlier)

Reading 3-4 Bolton - 1995 Play Off Final @ Wembley
Reading 0-3 Manchester Utd 1997 FA Cup (4th round?)
Reading 3-0 Wolves 1996 - Quinn's belter
Reading 2-1 Wolves 1997 - Archie's injury time brace
Reading 4-0 Sunderland 1997 - Asaba on fire
Reading 4-2 Wolves 1997 League Cup. - Parky's screamer and Adie's own goal.
Reading 3-2 Bolton 1997 - Quinn in goal
Reading 3-0 Luton - first game at Mad Stad.
Reading 3-0 Forest - Watson changing the game
Reading 3-2 'Boro - First Premier League game
Reading 2-3 Manchester Utd - FA Cup replay

Those are just the ones off the top of my head. Unfortunately I get to much fewer games now that we're actually good, as opposed to when were on a downward slide in the mid to late 90s. Too much beer means I struggle to remember what games I went to after a season finishes these days.
