Beckham abused, should we do the same?

by oldebiscuit » 21 Jul 2009 21:24

Noticed on yesterdays news that the Galaxy crowd gave Becks a bit of grief over his decision to play half the US season in Italy. It was good to see that they had no time for disloyalty and the fact that his heart was not at their Club. Is this an example that we should follow? Should our 'want away warriors' be given the same treatment? If they do not want to be at Reading then should we help them on their way with our feelings? Discuss...

We should always boo our own players. Motivational booing has been shown, time and time again, to be sucessful.

actully fully agree here, if shunt wants away from the club that made him, then i dont see any reason to support him should he be forced to remain at the club next season

Ridiculous.

For a start beckham's situation is different. He's 33 nearly 34 (I think) and the south africa world cup is his last chance to win something with england. Capello has told him if he wants to be in the squad he needs to be playing in a top league and lets face it the mls doesn't fit that description. He loves his country and probably feels he owes it to england after that argentina incident, and if it means moving teams he would do it. You're forgetting that he originally moved on loan when the mls season was on a winter break to keep his body and mind in good shape for the qualifiers. If you look at his performances over in the mls you cant question his commitment as he is and plays like their best player. In that game he got booed, he set up both goals.
To compare him to S.hunt who is just moving because he THINKS hes better than he is and wants more money is stupid. Beckhams reasons are simply to play for your country in the world cup and as well as pip inter to the scudetto are far more acceptable than boosting your ego and driving a more expensive car to training.

However, i'm not a fan of booing individual players anyway and if he works hard in training (which only the playing and coaching staff know) and delivers on the pitch, then i'll support him and the manager.

None of that gets past the fact he is paid something like £200k a week to play for his MLS side and he's missed half the season to swan around with AC Milan

I can understand them being a little pissed off with him after all the sound bites about being there to progress MLS and that he didnt see it as a step down and all that crap he came out with when he took their money

Didn't we already have this discussion about Stephen Hunt?

I think Noel Hunt would love to play for a club whose fans shout abuse at his brother.

I think if he does end up staying, then nothing will inspire him more than to spend all the game hearing his own fans calling him gypo pikey scum.

For those that hate Hunt, the best way to get rid of him will be for him to play well and be bought by somebody on the strength of his performances. Abusing him will only make him less effective and so less likely to be bought.

The other benefits of supporting rather than abusing are that the team does better while he's still here, and we get more money for him.

There are no conceivable circumstances in which abusing him will make things better.

Yes 200k is a lot of money for a player who has played half a season, but it is well spent if you consider the marketing the club gets from his sales and boosting the clubs reputation. I've not heard one word from the owner moaning about his wages, just commitment. As for him seeing it a step down, who's to know. It's quite possible he thought he could still play for england while in the MLS and his performances over there have still shown he is streets ahead of his fellow professionals, as well as a committed individual. I've read some of the comments from Donovan in his book and he really hasnt helped either, he also strikes me as a jealous individual. The comments in his book, which have been a bit of a catalyst for the abuse toward beckham, have come from a man who spent the winter break on loan to bayern munich!

A very reliable source who know the Hunt brothers personally (Noel lived with them when he first came down) tell me that the club are playing the PR game to offload Stephen, and asked him to come out with those comments.

It's no secret Stephen wants to play in the Prem, but it's interesting if that is true, that it's the club who made that call. Apparently, they've also dropped the asking price to £4million.

No idea if either are true, just spreading the news.

he's a strange one. He apparently claims he can feel when his sister starts her period, or something like that.

Donovan did come back for the start of their season though didnt he? Isnt that the difference, Beckham missed games to play for someone else?

I dont think the fans will be overly bothered by the commercial income whilst they sit in the stands thinking they should be watching their star player instead of reading about his exploits for Milan
